agilebrit: (werewolf)
Because I always leave with more than I planned to.

I picked up four movies that were actually on my list:
Blood and Chocolate
Never Cry Werewolf
Casablanca
The Fugitive

And then two that weren't:
Blade Runner (which, let's face it, should have been on the list, and this one includes all three, no, wait, four versions: the original theatrical version, the international version, the Director's Cut, and the Definitive Version)
True Romance

I did not even know that True Romance was a thing until I saw it in the $7 bin. But, dude, that cast: Christian Slater (shut up), Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Walken. Directed by Tony Scott with a screenplay by Tarantino (who is admittedly not usually my thing, but, uh. DAT CAST). So. Anyway.

And, yes, before you ask, Blood and Chocolate and Never Cry Werewolf go on my Werewolf Shelf. Of course I have a Werewolf Shelf. You had to ask? To be fair, there are a couple of vampire and zombie sorta things there too, but it's mostly lycanthropes. You'd be surprised how many werewolf movies there are out there once you start looking for them...

Fortunately, they're having a special where if you buy a used DVD, you get a second one for half price. So all six of those movies cost me $32. Two of them were actually new and not used, and one was a bluray. So I'm not super distressed about the purchase, but it was rather more than I planned on.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to rearrange my DVD tower so that the new SF will actually fit on the shelves.

ETA: Argh argh argh. Casablanca was supposed to be a two-disc set, and only disc 2 is in the case. This was a new DVD in the half-price clearance bin, so, uh. I don't know if they had any others. I guess I'll take it back tomorrow and find out.
agilebrit: (Detective Hat)
I hied myself to FYE today to pick through their extensive collection. I picked up six movies for under $22. One of them wasn't on my list, but it's a Downey movie and it was a dollar, so... yeah.

To replace the VHS tapes, I picked up:
Bedazzled
Mystery Men
Bullitt
Batman Forever (this remains my favorite Batman movie. And the only one I actually own. Shut up.)

Along with a pair of Robert Downey, Jr., movies:
The Pick-Up Artist (which was a dollar)
The Singing Detective (which was new rather than used... and four dollars)

Win.
agilebrit: (Not the worst thing)
Well. I'm looking at these novel projects and realizing that, while the seven-point outline works really well for my shorts, I think I need something a little more extensive than that for a pair of novels. I pantsed the last novel, and that went all right (because I've apparently been doing the seven-point structure purely by instinct for years before I started using it consciously), but I think for these two I want something a little more... organized.

In the interests of that, I just toddled over to B&N's website, because I had a 25%-off coupon and I didn't get to use the 30%-off coupon over the weekend. I ordered Dave Farland's "Million Dollar Outlines," and "Serenity: Leaves on the Wind." Which should have gotten me free shipping.

And it did--until I applied the discount. Suddenly it's costing me way more because I didn't hit the magic $25 minimum. Aha, sez I, the new Carrie Vaughn is coming out at the end of the month, and I was going to buy that on the day anyway; I'll just pre-order it!

So I did, and that dropped the total price down below what two books would have cost me with shipping, even though the Vaughn book is a pre-order. Go figure.

But that means I have three things I wanted anyway coming to my door for a cost far less than it would have been in the store, and I don't have to leave my house. Win.

ETA: Well, that backfired. Since the Vaughn book isn't coming out until the 30th, that means my entire order will not ship until then. Which means I don't get the outline book in time for it to help me on these two until after the fact. Argh.

Oh well. I will muddle through them without it and then tweak them as needed after I read it. :p

So, my POS fridge died its third ugly death since we bought it, and we finally said "this is ridiculous" and decided to buy a new one. After doing some research and narrowing it down to two models, we set out. One of the local furniture chains has been good to us, and there's a clearance center two minutes away, so the Hubby and I hied ourselves that direction...

Only to find that it's moved to their new location in Furniture Row by the IKEA down in Draper.

So that was awesome. The next closest one was down the freeway a ways, so we hit it...

They're moving too. They didn't have one of the ones we wanted to look at, and we really wanted to get eyes on the thing before committing to buy, so we got the address of another one that wasn't moving and headed back up the highway.

We decided to stop at Best Buy, because they also had the two we'd narrowed it down to, and (at this point) are very glad we did.

They had a floor model on sale for nearly half off--not the specific model we'd been looking at, but it actually fits our space better and is more efficient and has more features. It also has a stainless finish. WIN.

The only hiccup came when we found out they can't deliver it until Thursday. "But if you take it yourself, I can knock another $50 off the price." Well, shoot. I think we can manage, considering we got a gun safe that weighed twice as much down to the basement by ourselves without dying.

Of course, today is crammed full. The Hubby has a morning appointment to get the windshield replaced in the Durango, and we've got non-refundable tickets to Cap2 for an afternoon showing. So what he's going to do is go straight from the car place to Best Buy to pick the thing up, bring it home, garage it, and then we'll head to the theater for the movie. After that, we'll wrestle the thing inside and set it up.

That's the plan, anyway. A better plan might be to pick it up after the movie so we're not so crunched for time, but we'll discuss that when he gets up.

We were griping that "it don't ever go smooth" on the way to Best Buy, but apparently things have a way of working out. I just hope we don't kill ourselves getting it set up.

Target has "Cabin in the Woods" on blu-ray for $8 in their pre-Black-Friday sale. The price isn't on the shelf, necessarily, and you might want to confirm it via scanner, but I did and am now holding my copy in my formerly nicotine-stained fingers.

And if you don't have a bluray player, well, this comes with an ultraviolet download, too, so you can have it on your computer or other device of choice. And, let's face it: You're going to get a bluray player sometime, right?

At least I've lost half the weight I gained in Portland, but I swear sometimes it doesn't pay to get out of bed.

That being said, I just bought these from a seller on Etsy:

Considering the fact that all I seem to wear are Iron Man tees anymore, they're apropos, and they were under $10, shipped. So, yeah. I snagged the last pair, but I bet she'll make more if you need these in your life the way I do.

in my formerly nicotine-stained fingers...

  • The new Invincible Iron Man comic
  • A copy of Empire Magazine, with RDJ on the cover as Sherlock Holmes, looking beat to hell
  • A copy of "Dragons and Dwarves" by S. Andrew Swann, a pair of novels in which there's a portal opened in Cleveland (yes, my first thought was "Hellmouth," why do you ask?) that lets fantasy creatures from another dimension into ours.

And the main reason I picked up "Dragons and Dwarves"? Because it's an urban fantasy with a first-person male narrator. Don't get me wrong, I love Sookie and Kitty, but Harry's getting lonely, y'know?

Also, I've scribbled another thousand words in the Ghost Ship fic, moved my plot forward, and finally introduced my ghosts--or a couple of them, at any rate. And they're arguing with each other.

This is going to be fun. GOD, I love this series.

As I told the Hubby when we walked out of the theater: NEVER DOUBT ME.

Jerry Bruckheimer + CGI rodents = PURE, UNADORNED WIN

The voice cast is superb. C'mon, Nic Cage, Sam Rockwell, and JFav? There is no bad there. Bill Nighy? Also FTW. The guinea pigs look like guinea pigs would if they walked on their back legs and talked. The attention to detail was amazing--I forgot I wasn't watching real animals. And I didn't see the twist coming.

Also, killer appliances. COFFEE WILL KILL YOU, YO.

Is some of it cheesy? Oh, you bet your ass. Does it matter? Oh, hell no.

Yes, we thoroughly enjoyed this. Even the Hubby.

However, we forgot that this is the 24th and we live in Utah. The theater was PACKED. We were going to go to the two-something show and ended up at the 4:10 show instead. But this just gave us the opportunity to hit Wally World and pick up "Coraline," the director's cut of "Watchmen," S2 of "Pushing Daisies," and "P&P&Zombies." Gonna be busy for awhile.

    ...

Yeah, American Idol is going to suck tonight.

However, we went to see "Monsters vs Aliens" in 3D this afternoon, and it was excellent. Also, Target has Heroes (both seasons) for about $19, I found a 1gig thumb drive for $6, a set of laptop speakers for $12, and I found "Wonder Boys" at Best Buy for $5.

I didn't actually buy "Wonder Boys," because I didn't realize I had as much money as I did, but this will be rectified tomorrow when we go out to go grocery shopping and hit the comic store for four (count 'em!) comics.

And then once I add "Wonder Boys" to the collection, I'll have nine RDJ movies in the collection that I haven't watched. Pathetic fangirl is pathetic.

    Oh, god.

I had a dental appointment this morning. Yes, another one.

On the plus side, I did not require a root canal, and I got to watch Iron Man again.

On the minus side, the crown they fitted me for on the last visit...didn't fit. So...yeah. Also, once I could feel my face again, this was not an improvement. All hail ibuprofen.

AND THEN. We went to the bank. And the comic store. I can has Solomon Kane and Smile Time. And the bookstore. I can has a new Carrie Vaughn Kitty book and a new (to me) Iron Man trade. And then Circuit City. I can has "The Fountain" (Hugh Jackman FTW). And then Wallyworld. Groceries. New Sookie Stackhouse. And then Smiths. Pizza, cheap Valentine's chocolate, and soda. I can has Con food.

Because LTUE is tomorrow, baby. I shall be very very scarce on LJ and IM until Sunday.

    No, no, nonoNO!

Robin Hood stole from the government and gave to the poor. I realize that "he stole from the rich to give to the poor" is more catchy, but it's wrong. GYAH. This exercise in attempting to set the record straight has been brought to you by "A Bug's Life" and a preview for the Disney version of Robin Hood.

In other news, I am holding, in my formerly nicotine-stained fingers, a bunch o' loot:

  • The Stepsister Scheme, by the handsome and talented [livejournal.com profile] jimhines.
  • Definitely Dead, a Sookie Stackhouse True Blood novel by Charlaine Harris. Yeah, I've gotten hooked on these.
  • the Ultimate Hulk vs Iron Man: Ultimate Human graphic novel. Because I'm a big ol' nerd and I had a coupon for 30% off.
  • Ender's Game #3.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer #22. Of course, I haven't actually read one of these since #12 or so... I am woefully behind on my comic reading. And it's not getting any better.
  • The Invincible Iron Man #10 and holyshit is that a needle heading for his eyeball on the cover??? Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Why, yes, not!Harry comes by his mad needle fear as a result of me projecting. Why do you ask?
  • No.

    Remember the shoes?

    They came today.

    And they're too small.

    *curses humongous feet of humongousness*

So, I am returning them and ordering them in a larger size.

    Woe.

In other news, I've scribbled 64 words today. Which is 64 more than I did yesterday. I'm nowhere near my normal goal for the week, let alone the doubled goal I was trying to do for NaNo. I still have no idea how I'm going to make this next bit interesting until I smack not!Harry upside the head with his next crisis.

I've mentioned that he's My Favorite Punching Bag™, right?
