As you know, Bob, I'm a huge Robert Downey Jr fan. I will go see him in a movie where he sits on a stool and reads the phone book for two hours. This is not a secret.

That being said: No matter how much of a drooling fangirl I am, not every movie he's in works for me. I loved Iron Man beyond all reason and have probably seen it twenty times. And then he did "Tropic Thunder."

And he was amazing in it. Robbed of the Oscar, IMO. But I didn't actually like the movie itself that much. Yes, it was alternately hilarious and horrifying, sometimes at the exact same moment, but the horrifying moments and the near-constant f-bombs overshadowed my enjoyment. I only saw it once, and it's not in my DVD collection (yet).

Then he did "The Soloist." Which he and Jamie are both amazing in. But it's a Big Serious Movie about Big Serious Issues, and it's not, for lack of a better word, "entertaining." Nor is it meant to be. It wrestles with a tough issue, and I'm good with that, more power to them for going there and not ending it with sunshine and roses and easy answers. But, again, I've only seen it once. There's only so much Sad I can take.

And then Sherlock Holmes crossed my radar. Well. It crossed my radar before they even began filming, because of the aforementioned "drooling fangirliness." I have been looking forward to this movie for over a year. I was terrified that it would disappoint me, that it would rape a beloved character sideways, that it would fail to Tell Me A Story. I had to wait a week after it was released to see it, for various reasons, and I was on pins and needles.

And then I finally got to see it. And it thrilled me. The characters, the story, the cinemetography, the acting, OMG the music--it was a delight from beginning to end. THIS RIGHT HERE is what a movie should be. THIS RIGHT HERE is what I want in a RDJ movie. THIS RIGHT HERE is what I want in a Sherlock Holmes movie.

The relationship between Watson and Holmes. Holmes being a badass. Holmes being too clever for his own good. Holmes having a woman fall in love with him with no idea what to do with that. Watson being long-suffering. Mary being awesome. A villain with a dastardly plan that only Holmes can thwart.

And underlying it all, a sense of out and out FUN. I've now seen this movie three times, and it never gets old. It's brought back the same feelings I had watching Iron Man. And that's why I love it.

OMG, y'all, FIC REC.

Anyone who's seen "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (the movie with RDJ, Val Kilmer, and Michelle Monaghan, not the Torchwood ep) needs to go read this, right now.

And if you haven't seen KKBB, then you need to go get the DVD, watch it, and then read this.

Or you can read this, get intrigued by the narrator, and then get KKBB. Either way.

If Val Kilmer had a cameo in "Due Date."

Maybe in the hospital. (I assume there's a hospital.) They could all meet in a corridor, look at each other for a minute, and then go "Naaaaaaaaaaaaah."

It would be epic. I realize it's a two-percent joke, but I would kill a small rodent to see that.

In other news, I think I fixed Ben. For a certain value of "fixed."

Now I have to finish out that scene, figure out how the Bad Guy catches them all, and also figure out what the hell Janni is doing while Ben's in prison. No, I still haven't written her scenes yet. You may paint a giant "L" on my forehead.

Yes, I'm sure you're all waiting with bated breath to see what I thought about the movie since I've been, you know, talking about it for a year. Well, the lovely and effulgent [livejournal.com profile] bigsciencybrain and I went to see it this afternoon.

I loved it. Every single second. THIS RIGHT HERE is what an action thriller should be. Don't get me wrong, I love big dumb action flicks as much as the next person (Live Free or Die Hard is in my DVD collection), but this was a big smart action movie and such a thrill ride.

I expected to like it. I expected to like it a lot. I was terrified of being disappointed, honestly. This movie did not disappoint me at all. From the script to the characters to the music to the action, this had it all and then some.

I mean, I literally forgot I was watching Robert Downey Jr on the screen. ME, the person who has an LJ tag just for him, whose default LJ icon is a photoshopped version of him playing the main character in my novel, the person who would watch a movie where he just sat on a stool and read the phone book. I forgot it was him. He became Holmes.

May we have many, many sequels where the screenwriting is as stellar as it was here.

And yes, I liked it way better than Avatar.

Probably be spoilers in the comments.

So. I should be writing, right? I've got a deadline? The 30th?

Yeah, what am I doing instead?

Making wallpaper. I suck. Yes, that's Janni's name tattooed on his arm, why do you ask? Song lyrics are from Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper."

Someone just smack me upside the head?

Oh god.

Because Terry Bellefleur (♥♥♥) has been known to wear this t-shirt:

I should totally get one for Ben, y/y? Nothing like being aware of your own issues...

Found this via the lovely and effulgent [livejournal.com profile] matociquala (Elizabeth Bear), who doesn't actually like the show.

I get to watch the season finale tonight! So, no spoilers please. :)

Also, this pic here is made of Awesome and Win. I've only found four of RDJ from this photoshoot--anyone out there with Sekrit Ninja Powers know where I can see more? The photographer is Michael Muller and the exhibit was called "Another Night Upon Us."

I love Robert Downey, Jr. If he's in a movie, I will go see it, no questions asked. He's one of those actors guaranteed to get my butt in a seat. This is not a secret.

I also love vampires. As long as they don't frakking sparkle in the sunshine. Because that's just wrong. This, also, is not a secret.

HOWEVER.

Anne Rice will always be conflated in my mind with the "you're interrogating this from the wrong perspective and straining my Dickensian principles to the max" wank that resulted when she got in a pissing war with some reviewers at Amazon. She strikes me as having an overinflated sense of her own writing. Everyone needs an editor, Anne. Even you. I have never picked up one of her books, nor do I intend to.

THUS, I do NOT want to see RDJ as Lestat, regardless of his fitness for the role. If he plays it, I will go, and hold my nose, because Lord knows I've seen him in some godawful movies (US Marshals, I'm looking at you, and yeah, Singing Detective, don't try to hide behind US Marshals, your butt's hanging out).

If Robert was to play a vampire, I'd rather see him as Jack Fleming, [livejournal.com profile] p_n_elrod's vampire private investigator. Because that would be a cool period piece (1930's! Speakeasies!), and I like Jack. Jack is cool. If you haven't read any of these, you should run out and find "Bloodlist," the first one.

And I'll stop babbling now, and write. I was hoping to break 100K today.
