Holy CRAP, y'all.

I've seen authors do dumb shit before. I've blogged about it.

But I'm pretty sure I've never seen anything like this.

So, what do you do if a reviewer/editor posts a review on their LJ that's less than flattering to your work?

Shrug it off, saying "to each their own"? That would be the smart thing to do.

Rant about it in a locked post on your own LJ? Not as smart, but probably acceptable if you keep it locked to people you know won't blab.

Rant about it in an unlocked post on LJ? Eh, that would probably be monumentally stupid.

However. Not as monumentally stupid as suggesting that the reviewer kill himself. And then, as icing on the cake, suggest that he take his cat with him.

Because, you know, that reviewer won't out you on his own LJ by publishing an email you sent him. And thus any career you might have had gets flushed straight down the toilet, because no one is going to want to deal with you after something like that.

Gee, it's a good thing that Kevin W. Reardon / Cole A. Adams is only in it for "the love of writing." Because that's about all he's going to get from here on out.

ETA: And now Mr. Adams/Reardon is sending death threats??? Oh. My. Gawd. I'm a writer, but, seriously. I've run out of words.

Son of ETA: And the review that spawned this? Kevin W. Reardon | "The Portico Angel" - a bad opening crippled this story for me plus the various relationships felt off. Suggesting someone kill themselves and death threats over THAT? Oh. Em. Gee.

Stupid is as stupid does. And that was one of the biggest stupids I've seen in a really long time. *nods*

I saw your comments there, and echoed them in my head, if not on the thread (because I don't know him and felt it wasn't my place). Because, dude, that just wasn't cool. I found it via [livejournal.com profile] nihilistic_kid's post on the subject.

Will I be seeing you at LTUE next month?

Yes you will! :)

May need a ride down. If I do, can we carpool?

Sure! Although I have a tendency to stay til the bitter END and then go out to eat, if that's cool with you. :)

'Tis! I'll just grab a ride home with Patrick or Paul if I get bored/tired. ;)

I don't know Steve personally, but I have stopped in at his journal now and then and I believe he at least used to post on the Boston Gaylaxians mailing list, and...Jesus Christ. Even if I didn't rather like the guy from what I've seen, no one deserves that kind of shit. Crazy writer is crazy.

(This has reminded me, though, that Steve had a story in Faery Reel, and I really meant to pick that up way back when it came out...)

Steve's a lovely, lovely person. A really good writer and a thoughtful, kind human being. I hope that you can meet him someday. And yeah, no one deserves that crap, but he least of all.

Faery Reel! Yes! Go get!

This is why pen paper and snail mail is superior. By the time you've got all three together, you've had a chance to think better of your impulses!

From: [identity profile] agilebrit.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think that the instant gratification the internet affords allows people to post things they'd never ever send via snail mail or say in personal person. I'm still boggling over this, though. Because who does that???

Did you see the most recent update is that he's apparently now sending [livejournal.com profile] mroctober death threats? I guess he got impatient waiting for the guy to kill himself like he suggested...?

*dies* Oh. My. Gawd.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

Now I want to see the review that spawned this...

Found it:

Suggesting someone kill themselves and sending death threats over that? Holy buggering crap...

Wow. Wow. He's...I mean, it wasn't even a review, it was just one writer/anthology editor airing very brief thoughts on another anthology on his own blog. And he didn't even say he hated it, just that the opening was bad and the relationships could've been better--that could even mean the entire story was great otherwise but those two elements made it an overall minus for him.

I mean...I understand being thin-skinned about this stuff. I won't lie, I don't like negative crit either, which I have got from the workshops I've been in. But if I'm going to rant about it I do so either in my head or in a locked post--and people have told me worse things than this!

The mind boggles. One wonders how this writer would react to actual negative crit.

Uttering threats is generally considered a crime. Idiot.

LOL! That was someone else's reaction as well, but apparently Nicky's been institutionalized by his family, according to a post on one of those threads.

Also, I think that pretending to be gay would be physically painful for him. ;)

If you're going to be a writer, you need rhinocerous skin. Not everyone is going to love your deathless prose. Apparently this writer has not learned that lesson yet...

Apparently not. *shakes head* I hope he cools it, and disappears for awhile.

The utter batshit insanity of that response just has me sitting here with my mouth hanging open. WHO DOES THAT? Is the guy TWELVE?

From: [identity profile] neo-prodigy.livejournal.com
You know, I used to hear about all of these horror stories from editors/publishers about writers from hell.

I thought they were just urban legends meant to scare writers and submitters because no one could possibly be THAT crazy.

This is what I get for believing in humanity.

From: [identity profile] agilebrit.livejournal.com
I think I'll choose to believe that this particular writer has a mental illness and went off his meds and thus off the tracks. Because that scenario is better for my personal sanity than the alternative, which is that a perfectly sane person suggested that a man who was clearly depressed should jump out a window and take his cat with him--because that man didn't like something he wrote.

Because, seriously...WHO DOES THAT???
