Title: Retained Skills
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: PG for vague violence and lots of kissage.
Words: 350
Disclaimer: Not mine, they're Whedon's. *sob*
Written for: [livejournal.com profile] illmantrim's request for a Xander fic in which he retains some of his soldiering skills from the "Halloween" episode in Season 2.
Notes: Okay, yes, I realize it's been done before, but, hey...ask and ye shall receive, to the best of my feeble abilities, anyway. Takes place sometime late Season 2 or early Season 3, while Xander and Cordy are still an item. I hope I didn't get them too OOC.

"Hey, guys? We'll go this way." Cordelia was about to object, but Xander shook his head at her ever so slightly. Her eyes widened in comprehension, and she grabbed his arm.

"Yeah!" she said. "We'll meet you over on the other side of the cemetery, ‘kay?"

"Um, sure. Be careful," Buffy warned as she, Willow, and Oz headed in the other direction.

A few minutes later, Xander and Cordy were snuggled behind a gravestone. "You...are a genius," she giggled.

"A man never gets tired of hearing that." He pulled her to him, and they were in the process of exploring each other's tonsils when something grabbed her and yanked her away.

"Okay! Not such a bright idea to separate from the Slayer after all, you dummy!" Cordy yelled, ineffectively beating the vampire around the head with her fists.

Xander shouted, distracting the vamp just enough to let Cordy wrench herself away from it. Abruptly, he found himself in soldier mode, and he practically went on autopilot now that the civilian was out of the way. Cordy watched in astonishment as he beat the vampire down with a series of scientific kicks and punches, using hand-to-hand combat moves she'd never seen him employ before. Then he pulled a K-Bar knife from its sheath in the small of his back under his shirt, grabbed the vampire by the hair from behind, and neatly decapitated it.

"Are you okay, miss?" he asked reflexively, straightening and brushing the dust off his clothes.

"Whoa, stand down, trooper." She waved her hand in front of his eyes. "Xander? What was that?"

He shook his head, coming back to himself. "Cordy! Um, uh...oops?"

"Xander?" She looked at him more closely. "Oh. My. God. That was so...hot! Where have you been hiding those moves?"

"Well, he threatened my woman," Xander said, pulling her into another kiss. "I couldn't let him get away with that."

"Sexist pig," she mumbled.

"You love it," he mumbled back.

Later, they met up with Buffy, Willow, and Oz at the other side of the cemetery. "Any action?" Buffy asked.

"Not much," Xander said casually. "Dusted one vamp, is all."

Please let me know if they're out of character, guys. I need to know.

It's in S3, where he probably still did have the Soldier memories, so I don't think it's out of character. Although I do think Cordy could be more snarky.

And I love the last line.

Thanks! I didn't really give Cordy much to do, but I wanted her to be snarkier too. For some reason I just wasn't into the snark on this one. *sigh* I guess it would help if I'd actually seen the first three seasons...

I love it - and we know he retained skills as far as the end of season three when he helped organize the war against the mayor

very cool story!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed.

I'm thinking I may do this fic-request thing about once a month. It was fun.

Sorry I'm not so positive. probably my fault for getting my hopes up too high after finding new C/X fic after sucha logn time, but anyway, it's a review,

It probably fits the challenge, but it has the flaw I see in most 'soldier-xander fic; it has him *become* the soldier. Whereas the real fun (and challence) is having him use the *memories* of the soldier to make his own Xander-ish plans (like they did on the show).
other then that, nothing wrong with it; the sneaking out to make out and Cordy liking a little sexism is very like them.
Although honestly, I;d have expected Cordelia to make the suggestion, she's just a little bit sneakyer when it comes to dating. Then again, she probably lacks the tackt to get awaay with it, so you made the right choise.

Thanks for reading anyway! I'll admit it's not my best effort ever, but I hope you enjoyed it. :)
