Life, as
grrm would say (if he was a Steelers fan) is magical and full of joy. The Steelers won today, in spite of the fact that me wearing my Steelers shirt on game day is usually a jinx. I am made ridiculously happy over this.
On the other hand, RDJ didn't get the Golden Globe for best actor for his role in Tropic Thunder, losing to Heath Ledger, which, I suppose, was a given, considering the circumstances. Alas. Personally (and this isn't my bias talking, really), I think Robert was robbed. Heath was great in his role as the Joker, but, you know, psychopaths are a dime a dozen and I'm not sure that it was really a "nuanced" role. Robert, on the other hand...
Well. Show me another white American actor who could have pulled off playing an Aussie actor playing an African American who then disguises himself as a Vietnamese farmer. Convincingly, and without being offensive. Even though it was a comedy, I think it was a more complex role. YMMV, of course.
In other news, I'm about 2/3 of the way through another readthrough of the not!kkbb/im thing. Gawd, I love these characters. Oh, not!Harry. I just need to figure out where I can stick all the corporate bullshit so it makes sense within the narrative so my ending is tighter and not!Tony has more to lose than he did in the first draft.

Date: 2009-01-12 05:42 am (UTC)And I keep coming back to the fact that TDK was a...good movie--but not, to me, a great one. And I don't give Robert's movies a pass just because he's in them (I ranted about The Singing Detective and US Marshals, for example). I just think he was better in TT than Heath was in TDK.

Date: 2009-01-12 05:20 pm (UTC)In fact, I'll start:
The Hubby contends that Heath got the award because he's been a Hollyweird darling ever since Brokeback Mountain and his Big Gay Role.
Of course, this ignores the fact that Robert has played at least three gay roles (Wonder Boys, Home for the Holidays, Black and White), and in one of them even played someone who had AIDS.
So, on this basis, I don't see that Heath had a leg up over Robert that way. I contend that the Big Reason Heath got the award was because he died. There would have been buzz either way, probably, but the massive slobbering over his performance would have been far less.

Date: 2009-01-12 05:41 pm (UTC)I'm reminded of two quotes: "He took the coward's way out" ~Secret Window
"It's really political, you have to take out ads..." ~Tropic Thunder
Your hubby is right on the Big Gay Role. I have always found it entertaining that the people militantly for "gay rights" are mostly STRAIGHT. XD And of course the press ignores real talent; why do you think RDJ gets snubbed and Depp didn't win an Oscar for Sweeney Todd?
