The Washington DC Circuit Court has struck down DC's 30-year-old ban on handguns, citing the 2nd Amendment as an individual right. More here.

I do believe that this is the first time this has happened.

As a self-admitted 2nd Amendment Fundamentalist and the wife of a Concealed Carry permit holder... yeah, I'm doing a little chair-dance right now.

When I saw that news, I thought for sure that it'd be all over my flist.

I thought it'd be someone on the other side who posted first.

I'm a bit sick and sore, so I won't chairdance, but I get you.

Come to think of it, this is a bit more appropriate as an icon.

"I'm going to go threaten to seriously hurt or kill someone for their wallet, but I won't use a gun to do it. That would be illegal!"

Oh, wait...

I'm probably going to lose my liberal cred for this, but I'm actually happy to hear this. Gun control doesn't work in the real world.

You can bet that this announcement will be greeted (if it hasn’t already) by doomsday predictions from the inevitable liberal/hoplophobe wailing chorus. When Florida approved shall-issue handgun licenses, there were lurid predictions of massacres in the streets, Dodge City with full-auto weapons. Instead, armed robbery statistics went down, because robbery was suddenly a more dangerous occupation when nobody knew which prospective victims might be armed.

Will there be problems? Count on it. My personal experience is that any freedom — ANY freedom — will inevitably be abused by someone. If more people are allowed free access to handguns, there will almost automatically be more deaths caused by handguns. (The same could be said for automobiles, swimming pools, or electric toasters.) Some people are bad, and some people are stupid, and these people WILL cause problems if allowed the opportunity. Is this an argument against handgun ownership? Hell, no. Why should all those who are intelligent and responsible be penalized because of the defectives?

I agree with you that this is a rare and unexpected sign of sanity. I’m not sure it can be taken as a harbinger of more such good news. But we can hope.

This happened in DC? That's completely amazing! Sanity so rarely reigns there.

It's refreshing, but did you see this?

"Judge Karen Henderson dissented, writing that the Second Amendment does not apply to the District of Columbia because it is not a state."

Methinks someone who thinks the Constitution doesn't apply to federal districts ought not be a judge...

Darn that pesky Bill of Rights anyway! I wonder what other rights don't apply in the District of Columbia because it's not a state? Do these people ever THINK before they open their mouths?
