I freely admit that under most circumstances, I have a black thumb. I once managed to kill a cactus, for crying out loud.

However, last year I planted some catnip for the cats. And it grew. And grew, and grew. Which was pretty shiny, and the Gray Cat enjoys it. She doesn't go nuts over it the way our Audrey Kitty used to, but she rubs on it and rolls on it and then sleeps with her nose right next to it. So, that experiment was a success. The stuff is still growing, in fact.

On our walk route, there is a cherry tree. This year, I noticed little treelets growing in the lawn where this tree grows. Figuring that they'd just get mown down later, I liberated five of them and planted them in pots, sticking them in the same window I've got the catnip in.

Three of them have taken off. I killed one of them by attempting to bonsai it. And the last one...hasn't died, but hasn't grown either. Weird. Maybe it'll bonsai itself...

In other news, today I need to clean the bathrooms, call the store and see if the patio furniture has come in yet (it hasn't), and go to the bank. Walk. Possibly dust. And write. Tons of TV tonight: Season finale of "Bones" and "CSI:NY," and a new ep of "Lost," plus results for AI. Someone wanna 'splain to me why they need a whole hour for AI tonight? Blah. *crosses fingers for Taylor*

Oh Thank Goodness!! I thought I was the only person to ever kill a cactus! My Mom's got a green thumb, but me and plants do not get along.

Which is fine, except my Mom keeps giving them to me and I'm lucky if I remember to water them every other week. In fact...I'm not sure when the last time I watered them was.

Crud.

I've got a really nice bay window in my kitchen that I stuck the plants in, thus they are right next to the sink, which is where the water is. I'm thinking this is the only reason that the catnip lived.

The poor cactus plants...it started with three in the pot, one of which died. I didn't water the other two for YEARS, literally...and they hung in there. Then I started watering them last year when I planted the catnip, and they actually GREW. And you can see where they stayed the same size for ages, and there's a distinct line where they started growing. Poor things.

Catnip is pretty hardy, like most of the mint family. Some things just have that tenacity; I have a Boston fern that I have had for over 20 years! I water it once or twice a week, occasionally take it outside for a really good bath, and basically ignore it. It's been in the same pot for about 6 years.
One of my flist, [Bad username or site: cactus watcher @ livejournal.com] posts lovely pictures of the cactus (cacti?) he grows.
