ff_friday's "First Kiss" challenge.
Notes: Jayne/Zoe, another in my series that started with "Blooming Cactus," and continued with "One Man's Weeds" and "Hair Fetish." Title is from an Agnes de Mille quote: "Then I did the simplest thing in the world. I leaned down...and kissed him. And the world cracked open."
Jayne never kissed them on the lips. Not ever. He learned that lesson the hard way when he was a young 'un, after wakin' up with an ugly headache and empty pockets. Any time a girl, any girl, tried to kiss him on the lips, it'd become second nature for him to turn his head so she missed. He didn't mind kissin' anyplace else, for sure, but when a girl tried to kiss him on the mouth, he got all sorts of uncomfortable, like she was trying something she ought not to.
Zoe, as always, was different. She wasn't above taking what she wanted, and at this particular point in time, she wanted his lips. And damn if he didn't just give 'em to her.
It was her turn to cook dinner, and she'd been at the cutting board chopping up some honest-to-God vegetables they'd managed to buy after their last job. He'd come up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, which was ridiculously slender for such a tall woman, and buried his nose in her hair. And she'd dropped the knife, turned around, and planted one on him.
He hadn't expected her to do that, and his brain shorted out momentarily. His eyes widened in shock, but hers were wide open too, watching his reaction, and he didn't take but a second to get into the spirit of the thing. He felt her smile as he responded and then he was mashing her to him and tangling his hands in that hair he couldn't get enough of. He shoved a momentary vision of the airlock ruthlessly out of his head.
He lost himself in her for a bit...until River came dancing barefoot through the kitchen and chirped, "About time!" on her way to the cockpit.

Date: 2006-04-28 02:45 pm (UTC)I can so see the "brain shorting out moment" in Jayne. Ah Zoe... a knife, food, and kissing.. how can that combination not be a happy one for Jayne.
Toss in a observant River and you got yourself and nice little story.
Happiness as reading more of your writings. Those of us who can't write wait patiently with baited breath for stories to read!:)

Date: 2006-04-28 05:37 pm (UTC)The writing's been coming hard lately for some reason. Either my prompts have been sucking, or the Muse has left the building. The start for this little 300-word thing has been sitting on my hard drive for weeks. *grouchily opens the other Jayne/Zoe thing I've got going and beats the crap out of Jayne...after which I got nothin'*

Date: 2006-04-28 08:41 pm (UTC)I didn't connect them as a couple either, until I wrote the first one and it just sort of happened. And the Hubby and I have gone 'round and 'round about this, because he doesn't like Jayne much, and he doesn't get the attraction or see what he brings to the table in a relationship. But, you're so right, she "gets" him--and Jayne is completely different than Wash was, and so it's not like Zoe's *replacing* Wash...and in this particular case, it's not like it's even something she was looking for.
Anyway, I didn't mean to write an essay on your comment. LOL I'm glad you liked it. :)
