So I revisited the fic I started when [livejournal.com profile] ff_friday had a free-write week, choosing the "First Kiss" challenge. Alas, the free-write week expired some time ago, but nothing says I can't post the thing anyway, right? It's short, exactly 300 words. Therefore, I'm going to be mean and not LJ-cut it. :-p

Written for: [livejournal.com profile] ff_friday's "First Kiss" challenge.
Notes: Jayne/Zoe, another in my series that started with "Blooming Cactus," and continued with "One Man's Weeds" and "Hair Fetish." Title is from an Agnes de Mille quote: "Then I did the simplest thing in the world. I leaned down...and kissed him. And the world cracked open."

Jayne never kissed them on the lips. Not ever. He learned that lesson the hard way when he was a young 'un, after wakin' up with an ugly headache and empty pockets. Any time a girl, any girl, tried to kiss him on the lips, it'd become second nature for him to turn his head so she missed. He didn't mind kissin' anyplace else, for sure, but when a girl tried to kiss him on the mouth, he got all sorts of uncomfortable, like she was trying something she ought not to.

Zoe, as always, was different. She wasn't above taking what she wanted, and at this particular point in time, she wanted his lips. And damn if he didn't just give 'em to her.

It was her turn to cook dinner, and she'd been at the cutting board chopping up some honest-to-God vegetables they'd managed to buy after their last job. He'd come up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, which was ridiculously slender for such a tall woman, and buried his nose in her hair. And she'd dropped the knife, turned around, and planted one on him.

He hadn't expected her to do that, and his brain shorted out momentarily. His eyes widened in shock, but hers were wide open too, watching his reaction, and he didn't take but a second to get into the spirit of the thing. He felt her smile as he responded and then he was mashing her to him and tangling his hands in that hair he couldn't get enough of. He shoved a momentary vision of the airlock ruthlessly out of his head.

He lost himself in her for a bit...until River came dancing barefoot through the kitchen and chirped, "About time!" on her way to the cockpit.
