agilebrit: (Over My Head)
Well. I've got three new, large bookcases in my basement, waiting to be filled and organized. This is a good thing, because it's needed doing for a long time. This will go a long way toward getting the space down there clean enough that it'll be a place where I actually want to spend time, although there's still a bunch of other stuff that needs organizing. Who knew I had that much wall art? I sure didn't. Maybe some of it should go on the actual walls. I mean, we've lived in this house for eight and a half years. I think we're staying.

The next thing I really should tackle is this space beside me. I've got a TV cart with a bookcase on top of it. The TV cart itself is a disorganized horrible mess. The bookcase is overflowing with TV DVD box sets, RDJ movies (16 of those, behold my obsession, I really should actually watch some of them) and my "look how nerdy I am" collection of Iron Man and Serenity STUFF, along with 1/64th scale diecast cars like Pintos and Gremlins. Don't ask. I can't open the bottom drawer of my filing cabinet because of this mound of... books? Mainly books, yeah, stacked in front of it. "Stacked" being a term I'm using very very very loosely.

What I really need, is a taller, deeper bookshelf for the DVDs. That way, the Nerdy Stuff can be put in front of the DVDs rather than taking up a full shelf of its own. Then the small bookshelf that's there can go downstairs and be used to store... more books! Because, trust me, what I have down there might be enough FOR NOW, but it won't be for long at the rate I buy them.

So. What I need to do is some measuring, and some math. And then I need to write the dimensions down in a place where I'll actually have them with me next time I go to Wally World.

Yeah, the "over my head" icon is particularly appropriate, I think. Seriously, this is scary.

The space beside my couch is not only clean, now--but organized.

In a manner of speaking. The floor is clear. I moved the filing cabinet over, put the home theater speaker next to the couch, and put a tiny little bookcase that wasn't doing anything much between the sofa and the file cabinet. And the backup drive, the speakers for my laptop, and the CD/DVD drive are accessible and halfway organized. Not only that, but I realized that the DVD/CD drive has a little stand so it can sit upright instead of flat, which frees up more space.

Now I am actually twice as likely to actually watch a DVD when the Hubby's not home because I won't have to wrestle with remotes and stuff. Yes, I would rather watch a DVD on my 10-inch computer screen than on the TV. I realize that this makes me weird.

I still need the aforementioned bookcase for the DVD box sets and fannish miscellanea. I still need to clean out the TV stand, which now has only one door I can open because I blocked the other one with the file cabinet. I may tackle that in a couple of days, after I've recovered from this. Yes, I have to recover from housecleaning. I'm not good at it, and it stresses me out.

But I feel like I actually accomplished something today.

Now to order the science curriculum I want for Da Boy... DONE.

And I'm already leaving "Oh, god, fix this" notes to myself in it.

*repeats mantra* It's a first draft, it's allowed to suck. It's a first draft, it's allowed to suck. And since this is me, it's more of a "vague outline." But I digress.

Hopefully, this thing will practically write itself--I'd like to be able to give it to my Writing Buddy on Saturday. And since it's another one starring my intrepid spaceship crew, at least I know the characters, so I'm not going to be flailing around inventing them. The ghosts are another matter, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

HOWEVER. I did enough extra work today that tomorrow is a day off. I have a 40% off coupon for Borders, which I will probably invest in a John Joseph Adams anthology (either the vampire one or the apocalypse one, not sure which). And then I will sit in their coffee shop with a coffee milkshake and a pastry and write. The change of scenery will do me good.

In other news, I'm pretty sure I saw a vole when mowing my lawn today. It was cute, and as long as it stays outside, I'm fine with it. Also, I forgot to eat today, and now it's too late.
