The Gender Genie

agilebritWell, this was an interesting exercise. I went to the Gender Genie today. It's a script that supposedly predicts the gender of an author, based on keywords, and you can find it here:

I entered a bunch of my fics into it and got some *ahem* funny results.
"Kitten Poker with a Physicist"--Female. I'm cool with that. It's not really written from any particular character's viewpoint.
"Mind Invasion"--Male. Gunn's POV, first person. Cool!
"Reflections"--Male. Spike's POV, first person. Uber-cool!
"Spark Ch1"--Male. Buffy's POV, first person. Hmm....Perhaps I need to work on her voice a bit.
"Spark Ch2"--Female. Spike's POV, first person. GACK! Of course, he's crazy in that chapter. But, how strange.
"Lineage"--Male. Dru's POV, first person. Again...crazy girl. And again...how strange.
"Closer"--Female. Buffy's POV, first person. [Big Grin]
"Dirty Little Secret"--Female. Wesley's POV, third person. Waaaaah!
"Salvation" both chapters--Male. Spike's POV, first person. Woo-hoo!
"They Deserved It"--Male. Anya's POV, third person. But she just killed about a dozen people. Not sure how that computes.
And I see from this that I write a lot of first person fics, even though my two longest ones were written from the third person. I'm not sure what the results say about my writing style. It kind of looks like, most of the time, I get the "voice" of the character into the right gender (according to the script, anyway). Out of ten stories/chapters I submitted, five of them got the gender of the character dead on, and two of the ones that didn't were from the POV of a crazy person, so I'm not sure if they count or not.
And it looks like I write more like a man than a woman. Now, whether this is because I write male characters more than I do female ones, or because my brain is wired that way, is open to question.

"As Yet Unknown" - Male/Female depending on chapter
"Held" (ficlet) - Female
"Raison D'Etre" - most chapters came up as male. Here's the really interesting part. I sampled a few bits here and there - my Spike was usually male while Xander, Willow, Dawn, etc. were mostly female. But Cara? All of the pieces from her POV came up male. Hmmm...
