Okay, so we watched "Lost" last night, and it was Sawyer's episode. And now the Hubby and I are having a disagreement about it. Understand first that, while I think Sawyer's an ass, I have a thing about dimples you can plant potatoes in, and I'm getting a very "Spike" vibe off of him, so I'm probably more sympathetic to his character than perhaps I should be. Hubby, OTOH, hates him with the fire of a thousand suns, because of the aforementioned assness and the fact that I like him in spite of himself.
So, my take on this ep was that it wasn't our Sawyer perpetrating the con on the couple. My take on it was that he was the little boy at the end, and that dropping the money and walking out was what he wished had happened. Hubby's take on it was that he'd basically been a con artist from the age of 19 (when he said he needed $6000 and did the same thing that the original Sawyer did to his family), and that it was him doing the con we saw throughout the ep, and his conscience up and bit him on the butt when he realized that he had become the man who'd destroyed his family.
I'm on page 7 now of the TwoP message board for this episode, and so far I've only seen my interpretation of this episode from one other person. So, maybe I'm smoking crack, or the dimples have skewed my perspective. At any rate, I'm going to watch the episode again (because I'm a weirdo and I taped it even though I was watching it) and see if I can pick up any clues. Anyone else have my interpretation of it? Just me? Okay, then.
Sawyer is suicidal. We saw signs of that when he faced off a frelling polar bear with a frelling handgun, and this ep cemented that. He totally wanted them to kill him. I'll be quite interested to see where they go with his character after this. We still don't know why he was in Australia or why he was on the plane.
In other episode notes, when Hurley was all over Jack about how he helped Shannon breathe, about two seconds before he said "That was so Jedi!"--I totally called that. I knew he was going to say it. Hurley's a big geek and so am I, and I <3 him. Charlie and Claire are adorable together. I wonder if she's going to die in childbirth, because baby + island = complication they don't need. I still haven't decided if Locke is a crazy old coot or a wise old mentor, but since he was so eager to sic Sayid on Sawyer, I'm leaning towards crazy this time around. Because, dude, the only one who's really living a dream on this island? Is Locke.
My nitpick of the week is that Sawyer said he found the book (memory escapes me at the moment) either washed up on shore or floating in the ocean. A book that's gotten wet like that? Won't look like that. The pages get all wavy and stuff. "It's about bunnies." Hee! Was I the only one who noticed that the lady he was conning bore a striking resemblance to Emma Caufield?
Yeah, I'm loving this show.
