But apparently trying to copy and paste it directly from the fic doc in Visual Editor adds a whole bunch of extraneous html and makes the post "too big." So that's awesome. I'm going to do some poking around to see if there's a simple way to do this, because the way I write these things, it will not Go Well if I try to paste it in any other way. Basically, I format it the way I want to read it while I'm writing it but will be easy to re-format to Standard Manuscript Format once I actually finish it.

What this means in practical terms is that I write in Times New Roman, single spaced, with paragraph indents and underlines for italics. And doing a C&P from that in html format would mean a paragraph o'doom that no one would want to read.

So I'm experimenting right now, because this is ridiculous. Seriously, there should be some way to C&P from Word that will give me spaced paragraph breaks and my underlines where I want them without all that html.

Thanks, LJ. Way to make my life harder.

EDIT: Oh, look what I found. YAY.

Can't you do a Find-and-Replace? Change all instances of "^p" to "<p>" or something?

Using underscores to mark italics? I'd change all instances of "_" to "<i>:" and then change every other instance of "<i>" to "</i>."

(Depending on which version of Word you're using, you may be able to record all this as a macro, assign it a button, and make it all a one-click process.)

Oh, and obviously save your file before you do this.

Find and replace, for a doc that size, is just laborious if I want to make sure it's actually right. I found a handy tool that lets me do it with no muss or fuss. :) Last time I tried to record a macro it went disastrously badly. LOL

I don't use underscores to _indicate italics_, I use underlines (unless I'm doing a plain text doc, which I only do under protest if a particular market wants it like that). I don't mind it coming across like that for the purposes of the concrit list.

That right there is why I stopped using rich text mode for anything and everything across all sites a few years ago. It's repetitive, but I write the HTML out as well as bold/italicize/etc in my docs. I'm so used to writing [em] and [b] (with closed brackets) that I find myself writing it even on paper! LOL

But congrats on your find. Yay for more needless little frustrations from LJ.

Edit: Wow. Had to use the <p paragraph html in order to separate my paragraphs! Edit2: SCREW YOU, LJ!!! Edit3: Oh dear fuzzy. I'm so sorry. *headdesk*

When I was writing fanfic for online posting, I used to put the html for it in-doc and format it for online posting, but I can't do that for stuff I'm subbing. But that little tool is quite handy and I'm going to be using it quite a bit, I think, in the next couple of months.

I always thought tat rich text was of the devil, and this just proves me right.
