And since it's only two weeks until the election, it's time for another Political Rant®.

So, Kerry says that President Bush has a Secret Plan to reinstitute the draft. Some facts:

FACT: The draft was instituted by a Democrat.
FACT: The draft was ended by teh eval Richard Nixon--a Republican.
FACT: Legislation in the House of Representatives to reinstate the draft was sponsored by two Democrats (Charlie Rangel and Fritz Hollings). When it came up for a vote, those two Democrats voted against it, but two other Democrats voted for it. They were the only ones who did. It was opposed by every single Republican.
FACT: It would take a vote of both Houses of Congress and the signature of the President to reinstate the draft. Do you really think that you could get 60 Senators (the number it would take to break the filibuster that would no doubt take place over it) to agree to even bring it to the floor?
FACT: The all-volunteer armed forces is a rousing success. What kind of idiot would force people to enter the armed forces if they didn't really want to? How effective a soldier would those people really be?

So, yeah. Get real. If you're going to vote against President Bush, don't do it because you're afraid he's got a Sekrit Plan OMG!!!111!eleventyone! to reinstate the draft.

Even better, the Pentagon doesn't want it (even during this war, they've met or exceeded recruitment goals) or need it (the 40,000 new soldiers Kerry wants couldn't be trained and brought to bear in a useful time frame).

Of course. Besides...isn't Kerry the one with all the "Secret Plans"?

Bah, politics. I'm glad that all I have to do is vote for our class president for now. Wouldn't be able to handle the confusion of real politics. X(

Hopefully I'll be more informed by the time I'm old enough to vote. Or I'll be in Canada.*moves to Canada to hide from SECRET PLAN's reinstated draft* - (I'd be a pathetic soldier anyway.)

In the meanwhile, what's "eleventyone"? Also, I don't think I commented on your icon. So...it's adorable. Mwaha. *snuggles the bunny*

LOL "Eleventyone" is a silly way of writing out 111...I was imitating fanpoodles and their seemingly uncontrollable urge to use multiple exclamation points...and then forget to hold down the shift key the entire time.

You don't want to move to Canada. Lovely place to visit, but (to me, sorry, no offense to my Canadian friends), the place is insufferably liberal.

Yup. Just the way we like it.

Oh, and thanks for the icon love. It's not very well done, but Lionhead Rabbits are teh kewt!

To me, politics isn't really all that confusing. I have a few issues that I don't budge on, and I pick the candidate closest to my views on those issues. Of course, I'm in the over-40 set, so my beliefs have been honed and hardened over the years. You have plenty of time to figure out what yours are. :-)

The secret is in knowing all politicians are just that ---- politicians. Get over that, and it's always the lesser of two (it is still two, regardless of the literal existence of other parties) evils.

Well, what's interesting to me is that from where I'm sitting, the main reason people are voting for Kerry is "He's not Bush." But the main reason people are voting for Bush is because they like him. That seems odd to me, but whatever trips their trigger, I guess. It'll all come out in the wash in two weeks. Longer, if the lawyers have their way.

I'd make a prediction here, but I've stirred up and participated in enough controversy for one day (not just here, but other places too), so I'll wait.

*sigh* You'll be waiting awhile. I got *nothing* written today except this little rant and a post on the GAFF board, which I may crosspost here.

*grins* Thanks! I was going to drabble today, and nothing happened. It still might; I've got a drabble mouse nibbling on my ankle, but I'm not holding out any great hopes.
