So, a friend of mine, the handsome and hard-working Dan Wells, has a new book coming out on Tuesday called "The Hollow City," about a man with schizophrenia who finds out that some of the monsters in his head are real. Now, Dan is a brilliant writer, and I was going to go to the book launch on Tuesday, because I like Dan and want to support him, plus I don't know how much more I'll get to see him because he's moving to Germany, where he is the David Hasselhoff of Horror.

I toddled over to Amazon to see how much this book was going to set me back and just about plotzed when I saw the cover price. Perhaps I would not have plotzed so much were I not assiduously saving to go to WorldCon in Chicago in August. I am all for supporting my local independent bookseller. But I'm not sure it's worth the extra $10 hit to my wallet right now.

...and I see via his webpage that he's going to be looping around to the area again twice more before he goes winging off to Germany. This opens my options.

Will he have copies available at the Book Launch? They might be cheaper and, even if they're not, at least you'd know that he's getting more of the money.

And I had no idea he was moving to Germany! Wow... (which may just be an indication of how far behind I am on Writing Excuses).

The bookstore will have them, but he gets the same royalty no matter what the customer pays for the book. But I'm thinking it'll cost me as much in gas to go to either of those places as it'll save me shopping at Amazon, plus the fact that the free shipping doesn't kick in until you spend $25. And, while I could buy more stuff and get it up to the $25, that kind of defeats the purpose of shopping there.

So, I'm going to the book launch, and I will borrow $30 from the pig and then pay myself back on Friday. This is a terrible habit to get into, but I can convince myself it's for a good cause.
