...still have not rebooted my writing brain. This is getting ridiculous. This morning, I looked at the notes the Hubby made for the ghost ship story and I'm just... bleh. I know how to fix it, but fixing it is going to require a good two thousand more words and I'm kind of tired of writing fiction that's not marketable because it's too damn long. It's already at 5500 words and I don't see how I justify another two thousand for a story like this unless I can turn it into some kind of commentary on the human condition instead of a rather silly and fun ghost story.

In other news, we saw "Madagascar 3" the other day and enjoyed it thoroughly. Anyone who's seen the Cirque du Soleil will recognize the set-pieces, which are visually gorgeous. Now I want to go to Vegas and see another show. The Hubby and the Boy have never seen it, and they need to.

Today, we're going to see "Brave." Which looks awesome. Pixar has yet to disappoint. And, I don't care what anyone says, I also need "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter" in my life and will go see it next week when Hubby and Boy are at Scout Camp, because it's rated R and thus inappropriate for Boy, and Hubby doesn't want to see it. Horror's just not his genre. I may inflict "Cabin in the Woods" on him when I get it on DVD, because I thought it was brilliant.

How about: Write Ghost Ship the length it needs to be, start saving quarters in a jar, and by the time both of us have exhausted the markets for our odd-length stories, we'll have enough saved up between us to go in together and self-publish an anthology. :)

Right now the quarters are getting saved as convention money. It's truly amazing how fast change and one-dollar bills add up when you stick them somewhere they're not going to be spent--since I started saving for Worldcon back in February, I'm actually $150 ahead of my goal because of quarters, dimes, and ones. At this rate, I might be able to go to Mile-Hi Con in October.

But, you know, with POD and e-publishing, self-publishing doesn't actually cost anything out-of-pocket anymore. You can go through Createspace at Amazon and just do it. I'm getting to that point with a few of my stories, in fact, and want to do it with the ones that have been published too. It's just a matter of getting the files into the format they want them in. :)

I'm just not happy with Amazon's business model - their aim doesn't seem to be serving the authors or the readers, just owning the entire market. And the customer service is ridiculous. I'm thinking of going with a smaller POD that competes with Amazon by making a point of having good customer service, freedom to set prices, multiple ebook formats, that kind of thing.

I wish I could go to cons :) But since we have two young kids, quarters generally go to the Disney jar. My husband loves Disney World :) So do I, but I don't get anything done. Disney needs a con!

Barnes and Noble also has a self-publishing arm, from what I understand. Maybe look into them as well?

Have you checked local-to-you cons? The cost isn't usually much (generally under $50 for a three-day weekend, or around $20 for a one-day pass), and interacting with other authors and attending panels is a great way to network. I've been saving for this one since February because it's in Chicago and the cost of the hotel is ridiculous, plus it's WorldCon so the cost of the membership is also ridiculous, not to mention I'm sure that food will be expensive too. If it hadn't been for the fact that the entire venue is in one hotel, I wouldn't have considered it, but since I never have to set foot outside, I'm okay with it.

Thanks for the link :) SC isn't exactly known for cons, but if the Upstate Steampunk Convention comes back, we'll try to make it.

My friend who is a scriptwriter hated Brave. He said it would give his four year old daughter nightmares. Why is he taking a four year old to see this movie? She's scared of everything because her older brothers torment her. Argh. I'm still gonna see it. I don't care. Give us your thoughts afterward

This is not a movie aimed at four-year-olds, so that's a frankly stupid reason to hate it. There's nothing wrong with the script and it's a beautiful movie with a decent message about love and family. If you go, be sure and stay through the end credits.
