agilebrit: (Writer of Wrongs)

Is done.

It needs a title, natch. Which I'm coming up blank on. But as soon as I figure that out, it's winging off to Writers of the Future.

I am very pleased with it. It comes in at just under 15,800 words. It's probably my most ambitious project ever, and I include the novel in that assessment. It is also every shade of Wrong, but twisted in just the right way.

Wish me luck. :)

I'm good with titles sometimes ;) Synopsis?

Best of luck with it - lots of excellent writers got a much-needed boost from WotF :) And if it doesn't fly there, you've got other options.

"A mage finds out that his village's magic is fueled by demons sacrificing the village children. Trouble is, no one believes in demons anymore, and the townsfolk think he's lost his marbles. The elders know exactly what's going on--and has been going on for generations--and refuse to stop it. In the process, our hero loses everything, and finally takes drastic measures to stop this terrible evil."

Or something like that. There's an angel too. I suck at summaries.

The other paying options for something that long are thin on the ground. I really hope WotF likes this one more than "Honorable Mention." Tor.com takes forever to get back to you and F&SF only wants a snail mail sub. This thing is over 70 pages long, properly formatted.

Sacrifice seems to be a big theme here - it's also a nice loaded word, but can be a bit melodramatic for a title. Let's see... Other ideas: The Demon you don't know (or the Demon you do), an unthinkable price, generations won and lost, at what cost?... I'll mull this over a bit more, but you should know best what fits the tone of your story.

I'd go with F&SF next - snail mail might put off some of the competition, thereby giving you better odds. Kinda wish I'd bought some ink and done that myself now. :) then Tor.com. I'm pretty sure there are semipro markets for longer works, or possibly you could find an anthology market.

I'll poke a thesaurus and a phrase site and see if I can come up with something pithy along those lines. Thanks for getting my gearbox going. :)

I'm definitely going to try F&SF before Tor. They've got a one-week turnaround, and I'd rather know sooner than later. And, you know, if Tor takes sim-subs, maybe I'll try other markets that also take sim-subs at the same time. Gigonautisaurus pays a hundred bucks, which isn't much for a work of that length, but it's a hundred bucks I wouldn't otherwise have, I guess. Anthos don't normally pay a whole lot either, but I'll definitely try those as well.
