The Princess and the Frog.

I am aware (peripherally) of the wank surrounding this movie. I...can't speak to it, and whether or not Disney Failed or Succeeded on that front. I'm not qualified, and I leave it to people who are.

All I know is that the story and the characters sucked me in and I loved it. Loved loved absolutely loved it. It made me cry because I was sad, and it made me cry because I was happy.

I'm not going to spoil it here (although there will be spoilers in the comments, no doubt), but this movie worked for me in every conceivable way.

THAT BEING SAID. This is not a movie for little, little kids. I'm pretty sure that had Da Boy been, say, six, rather than eight, parts of it would have had him freaking pretty hard. Think the Frollo "Fire" scene in Hunchback...only more than once. There are some scary, scary scenes here. And another one that's really sad. And that's all I'm going to say about that unless someone wants me to elaborate in comments.

So, yes, I recommend this, with that caveat.

I'm debating whether or not to take my daughter (four years old but precocious as hell). She found the mirror in Snow White to be all kinds of interesting, whereas it creeped me out badly when I was a kid.

I'll probably go by myself and take a look.

Yeah, definitely screen it first. The voodoo sequences were freaking me out a little--and I don't freak that easily (I mean, look at what I write!). Definitely screen it first.

But seeing it twice would not be a bad thing. :)

Glad I screened it; I'm leaning about 70/30 against at the moment. Depends on if I could catch her in a compliant mood where she'd LET me put my hand over her eyes. *grin*

Seriously, this kid does not scare easily. Or at all, to the best of my knowledge. She could handle everything except the last voodoo scene, but the villain's comeuppance spooked me.

But yeah, gorgeous movie. I adored the underwater dancing scene. *art-geek bliss*

Shoot. I was going to take G to see it, but if it's scary, I'm not sure that would work. She does love Scooby Doo, but that's not really scary. I guess it'll have to wait.

Dude that movie does seem like it'd be cool. I just wish I didn't haveta wait til it came out on DVD.

I saw it last night, and it was just wonderful! I completely love it, the heroes were great, the villain was fantastic, and even the sidekicks were fun.

(Might be a bit spoilery from here on out, so skip over if you like)

I also like how they tweaked some of the standard Disney tropes. The crazy witch with the snake sidekick, one of the good guys. The PRINCE was the one who gave up his dreams to help Tiana reach hers.

Heck, even the core moral is a good one. Wishing will only get you half way there, you need hard work to get the rest of the way, but work still can't be your whole life. You need to have fun as well. Ah, balance. :)

It's a dang fine film... and ya, pulls the tears too.
