I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to make me feel sorry for your serial killer. But DAMN.

Well done. *claps* That poor son of a bitch.

Also, I'm reading the fourth Cal Leandros book by Rob Thurman ([livejournal.com profile] robgoodfella), and she's done something here that you don't get to see in published fiction very often--she's got two first person POV characters alternating chapters.

Have I mentioned my first-person squee-age here? Maybe? I love first person. If I could get away with first person POV in all my fiction, I'd so use it, all the time.

In fact...

I just had a thought, about the not!Iron Man. Seeing as how the length makes it nearly unpublishable as-is, maybe I'll play with POV in that. Because I have alternating POV scenes in it, and I love love love the idea. I've done it before with success in fanfic...

Ever heard of the novel "East" by Edith Pattou? I think she uses 3 different 1st person POV (at least). It's one of my all time favorite books. Also "Zel" by Donna Jo Napoli (which I really enjoyed) uses several first person POV as well. Rob Thurman likes to defy rules though. I'm several books behind in her series, but I remember being impressed with what she was able to do stylistically in the first book.

I'm devouring her books right now because I think I can actually learn stuff from her writing. The world-building, the relationships, the characters--the barely-contained insanity that Cal is wrestling with right now...

Yeah. She's GOOD.

You don't see it very often because it doesn't work. Even if someone has the skill to pull it off, and manages to produce a good story, that's in spite of the alternating first person POVs and not because of it. A first person POV should be consistent; alternating POVs should be third person.

*shrugs* I like it, and I'm one of those who thinks that rules were made to be broken. Especially since (in this series) we've had three books from Cal's POV, and it's very cool to see Niko's now. I think, even with a tight 3rd POV, you can't get as deeply into a character's head as you can with first--and Rob is certainly pulling it off here.

It may be an entirely YMMV thing. I love first person and will take it any way I can get it, as long as it's well-done. ;)
