The guy at Geek Box got my hard drive out and into the case. This is the good news.

The bad news is that every computer he plugs it into can't find the data in it and is asking if it needs to be formatted.

I'm going to bring the thing home and see what I can do with it (probably nothing, but it's worth a shot, right?). It might cost as little (ha!) as a hundred bucks to recover it, or as much as $250. If they can.

This is bad. This is very very bad.

I don't know if you've tried this, but ask them if they can "image" it.

I honestly don't know if this is available commercially (I got mine imaged through my dad's work connections--he's a cop), but I do know it works. Even if parts of the harddrive are destroyed, all other data will be recoverable.

I'll ask them that when I go pick it up later. Thanks. :)

Are you okay, hon?

No problem...

I'm off and on. I'll update you all Halloween, which is the deadline for making up the work I've missed these past couple months.

He's pretty sure he can recover the data. It's the cost that's making me balk at this point--but I NEED that stuff. *sigh*

Yeah, you really do. I was lucky that my boss was able to recover my HD when it died. I shudder at how much it would have cost in Monterey.

I'm guessing your data is not backed up? Will you lose stories?

My data is not backed up, which I am of course now kicking myself for. I'll lose (some of) the latest revisions in the novelthing, and a bunch of videos I'd rather not lose, but the biggie is the pictures.

The guy is pretty sure he can recover the data, and I'm getting ready to plug it into this computer and see what I can see...

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I had this happen to me too. I lost so much. I'm seriously thinking of buying one of those external hard drives and back up my info on a daily basis. *nods*

I'm thinking about Carbonite.com. Because $50 a year seems like a small price to pay, now. I have an external drive too, but something offsite that wouldn't be damaged in a fire or other disaster is something to think about.

I've heard about carbonite, but I'm a little leery of storing all my info with someone else. I'm just old-fashioned, or being silly, I guess. =)

I email my completed stories to myself, so those are okay. It's just the not-complete ones (most of which I have on a thumb drive, so those are okay too), and the latest revisions of the novelthing. I've also got some videos that I wouldn't want to lose, and there's the pictures. I'm going to be backing up like crazy now, of course, but it's a little late.

The thing about storing offsite is that if there's a fire or something that destroys your computer and your backup drives, at least you can get it back. I have a lively horror of that...

I'm very happy to hear all of your stories are okay. =) That would have been beyond horrible if you had lost them all. I understand about your videos and pictures, and I hope you can recover them.

This is true. I pray neither one of us ever experiences that nightmare!

OMG... Sending SO MANY empathetic hugs!!! I've had similar instances. Lost 22 page 'thing' I wrote in college. Wasn't a story, was more a journal... but I spent 12 hours writing every random thought in my head and all gone.

EEP! And dude! It's your intellectual property on that sucker! Of course it's worth the $$, it's irreplaceable! :)

Nothing like that sinking feeling of realizing you may lose part of your life that could have been easily saved. Been there, done that. We bought an external hard drive we are backing up to, and we will keep it in a deposit box. The main problem with this system is that I probably won't bother to back up on it very often. Carbonite.com sounds like a better option for photos and such.
