This writing game is really really weird.

I posted yesterday that I "snapped Ben like a rubber band." And truly, I thought I had.

But when I was on the bike last night, re-reading that scene? I realized that he didn't break at all. He was in complete control the entire time, he stopped killing exactly when he wanted to, he was consciously aware what the consequences of him taking those guys out would be, and he ended up back on the table completely on his own terms.

So, yeah. He didn't break. He made a decision.

Sometimes, we don't know our own characters as well as we think we do, at least at first blush.

Sorry, Ben. I underestimated you. People seem to do that a lot.

The question then becomes, did the one trying to break him realize she underestimated him?

Well, the thing is, she wasn't trying to break him. Quite the contrary, she was trying to stop him from flying into a million pieces, because she went and fell in love with him. And everyone thought it was inevitable that he would, because of the whole situation and the fact that the wolves always break, sooner or later, and usually sooner.

And, oh, yeah, they realize they underestimated him now. Doesn't particularly help him--makes them that much more determined that he's going to die on that table, in fact. But they realize it. And the other guys who were messing with him are too busy being dead to realize that they underestimated him. *evil grin*

Glad to see he was able to take a few of them out. :) Go Ben.

Isn't it funny how our characters can surprise us like that. I love it!

This is one of the reasons I love Ben. He still has the capacity to surprise me. :)

Well, it's funny, because he's so fragile...but the young man has a backbone of steel under there that we don't get to see unless he's really pushed to the wall. And I didn't even realize what had happened at the moment I wrote it. Wild.
