Yeah, wow, I just broke the ever-lovin' shit out of Ben. So much so that the document I'm doing this in (because I've started doing my new parts in new docs every day and then plugging them in where I think they belong before bed) is called "Ben Utterly Capitulates."

This is what happens when you strip all hope from a character. The vampire in his life decides that she'd better hide the silver (figuratively speaking, of course, he couldn't actually eat off actual dinnerware made of silver, but you get the idea).

What's more, I broke her a fair bit too. We've seen pieces of her caring for him before this, but I think this may be the first time we see an actual crack in her veneer.

And yet. There's still banter here, although it's desperately sad. He's completely bared to her, body and soul--but she's not ready to bare herself to him yet. Hell, she may not even realize, at this point, the depth of her feelings toward him.

And the thing is...

The thing is, I'm not at all sure he ever really comes back from this. He's been deconstructed so far that I don't honestly know if he ever gets himself completely back.

I guess I'll have to keep going to find out.

Because Janni's not going to let him go without a fight. He calls her "Hermia" for a reason.

"I'm a bad person.
Yeah, wow, I just broke the ever-lovin' shit out of Ben."

Nah, you're just a writer.

"The thing is, I'm not at all sure he ever really comes back from this."

As long as he's functional, for some value of that term, it's ok. Characters can change.

For a given value of "functional"... *cringes* I don't know. I just--I don't know. I guess I'm not even sure what that means, in context, at this point.

Because perma-wolf in the scrub would be "functional." "Not in a mental institution huddled in a corner wearing a straitjacket" might be functional. "Alive, not begging someone to kill him" might be functional...

Whoa! You had to go some to break Ben worse than you did in the last book. Sounds like he's in itty bitty bits in this one.

Tiny, tiny shards. Not only have I stripped him of all hope, but he's violated his own standards in a moment of weakness, which always has repercussions beyond the obvious.

And I'm not even done yet. *headdesks*
