Written for: open_on_sunday's 80's Challenge.
Notes: Inspired by the song "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes, the #8 song of 1984. Buffy's POV, sometime in Season 6.

Spike loves me.

No matter how much I deny it, I know he does. He's proved it often enough, before and after Glory. He protected Dawn, almost with his unlife, he patrolled when I was dead, and he helped my friends. He didn't have to do any of that. But he did, because he loves me.

But I can't let myself love him back, can't let him in. Love just hurts way too damned much. I loved Angel. I loved Riley. Look where it got me.

Loneliness is numbing, but it hurts less than loving and getting your heart shattered.

Thanks. Poor Buffy. I have a hard time being sympathetic to her because she was mean to my Spike, but when you dig into the girl, she had her reasons for doing things the way she did.

Not sure I'd go that far, since Spike said the assignment was for a 1500-2000 word fic. But I have written stuff that was sympathetic to her. *grumble* Guess I could start going through transcripts...
