Well, that, and I want this to slide into canon plausibly, and if there's any comfort to be found, I'm ... not seeing it, not where Tony and Pepper are in their relationship at that point in the movie. So, yeah.

You know, if you watch the movie closely, Pepper doesn't actually touch him that often. Nor does she here. It's stunning how little human contact the poor man actually gets.

That just goes right back to the fact that Tony's closer to his robots than people. He fondles cars and machines, strokes Jarvis' keyboards (that came out way pervier than I meant it), lets robots dress and undress him in the armor...
