On a second viewing, it's even more WTF than the first one.

We have:
  • Booth recovering from a gunshot wound to the chest in time to Tom Sawyer his own funeral and beat down a random bad guy.
  • How the hell do they know those screws are silver? I can't tell silver just from glancing at it, especially from five feet away, without touching it.
  • The Bathtub Scene is even more WTF, although still funny. That bitty bandage on his chest? Yeah, NOT a shoulder wound, which is something I've seen bandied about.
  • "SILENCE--INTENSIVE CARE" on the window to Zack's room. What? What hospital has that?
  • Brennan kisses Zack on the forehead. OOC. Severely.
  • No. Pie. Booth always has pie. It's the reason they go to that cafe.
  • "Drugs give me bad dreams." Yes, this is a prime example of that.
  • Random bad guy at the beginning, random bad guy at the end. Nice bookending. Which reinforces my notion that it's a dream sequence.

And I'm going to cling to that theory until next season's premiere. Because "dream sequence" is less sloppy writing than "Boo! Zack is Gormagon's apprentice."

i thought your review sounded really interesting so i am doing some reading about this episode. a lot of other people seem to also hate it. i keep reading that Zach was manipulated into thinking that it was logical to murder and eat people. but i don't really get how. what happened? why was Zach helping the killer? and he made him dentures to eat people? what's that about?

Apparently he met Gorgamon at some conference or other and got "logic'd" into it. Hodgins is always talking about sekrit societies and all the OMG damage they do, and I guess Gorgamon took that and ran with it. Seriously, the whole ep was a great big WTF and if they don't fix it next season I'm going to be very put out.

I finally got around to watching it. A couple of points:

They stated it was two weeks between the shooting and Booth's funeral. Seems kind of long, but it allows for more healing.

Zack was only been Gormagon's apprentice for three months. There's another apprentice out there, and I think it's Sweets.

That's assuming this episode wasn't a dream, which is what I'd prefer.

I'm hoping that next season opens on Booth in a hospital bed, saying "I just had the freakiest coma-dream..."

    Because, GAH.

Alas, having read an interview with the series creator, I don't think that's going to happen. Apparently the strike-shortened season threw off their plan to build this Zack thing up more gradually (which, in my opinion, means they should have just carried the plotline into the next season rather than give it short shrift.)

EXACTLY. Argh. Yeah, I'm hearing stuff too. Of course, those might be carefully crafted red herrings. Probably not, though. *cries*
