It's my favorite narrative crutch! I have a conversation going, and it's suddenly interrupted by a monster showing up.

Of course, if I'd actually remembered my favorite narrative crutch, oh...three weeks ago, I would have saved myself a whole lotta hair-tearin'-out.

Usually I use this narrative crutch when my characters are having an awkward conversation and I have no idea how to end it. I'm not sure I've ever used it exclusively to introduce a monster...
