I got Da Boy up to watch the lunar eclipse the other night. He was suitably enthralled. The next morning, he asked me:

Is the moon going to do any more tricks tonight?

And he's been hitting the VeggieTales pretty hard lately; they've replaced Thomas the Tank Engine as his Favorite Thing Ever OMG, which gives me a happy, because VeggieTales are AWESOME, dudes. Now, as you may or may not know, the tagline for VeggieTales is "Remember, God made you special. And He loves you very much."

So, the other day, Da Boy asked me:

Are you special?

Yes, honey. Everyone is, in their own way.

But you're OLD!

I LOL'd.

That's a line from The Incredibles. The response, sighed, was, “That means no one is.” I've met people who were special, distinctive, nonpareils. I've also met people who were absolutely not, in any way. Some people were born to be extras in The Movie of Life.

(The grammar nazzies would come after you, by the way - or they once would have done. Everyone is in their own way… Red pencil!)

Well, I'm not going to be the one to tell a six-year-old that everyone isn't special. And honestly, I believe everyone IS, even if all they bring to the table of humanity is phenomenal kazoo-playing talent. Because, hey, I can't do that.

I think that "they" and "their" are becoming acceptable singular gender-neutral pronouns, in our evolving language. They're certainly more acceptable to me than such made-up abominations as "hir" and "sie."

It does sound like I was picking on you. I'm sorry: I really wasn't.

Yah, every once in a while I'll catch myself using their in the modern usage also. The old way is starting to sound quaint, an outmoded turn of phrase.

VeggieTales are indeed awesome. Even if you are old. :)
