Hey, Fox network? Yeah, I'm loving the promos for "Drive," really, I am. However, the word "kidnaped," contrary to all normal spelling conventions, is one of those pesky words that doesn't adhere to, um, normal spelling conventions. One p, please. No matter how wrong it looks.

And these are supposed to be professionals...

ETA: Nevermind. Apparently both spellings are correct and my WordPerfect spellchecker is on crack. *is suitably embarrassed*

In a rare moment of motivation (don't know where that came from) I just checked the Oxford English Dictionary and it doesn't acknowledge the spelling of "kidnaped" with one p. I was pretty sure that with the double and the single were both valid forms, but now I'm not so sure.

My WP spellcheck thwaps me when I try to spell it with two p's. I wonder if it's a "we spell it this way in America, they spell it that way in the UK" thing...

Is your WP from Microsoft? I adapt a general rule of thumb in life: If Bill Gates is in some way responsible for it, don't trust it. But I don't think I would have checked the OED if I hadn't just had a conversation about this with my mother the other day.

Nope, it's Wordperfect, from Corel. And I even checked it BEFORE I posted this. Apparently, however, OpenOffice thinks it's acceptable.

What's really funny is that I don't think I've ever seen it spelled with two p's in a professional venue ... and it's always looked wrong to me. The one-p spelling looks like it should be pronounced with a long-A sound. Everytime I use the word I have to consciously remind myself "one p." But consistency demands that we spell it with two p's...and yet my spellcheck rabidly insists that two p's is wrong, dammit.

I just looked it up in my 24-year-old unabridged dictionary, and it gives both spellings. So much for spellcheck...

There are two spellings? I've always spelled it with two p's. I just hate these kinds of words. Just pick one, dictionary!
