Been thinking about getting a 2007 Writers' Market. So I hie me over to Buy.com and see what they have.

Lo and behold, there's a "Writer's Market"... and a "Novel and Short Story Writer's Market."

Now, it seems to me, practically speaking, that the N&SSWM would be the more useful book for me. I don't write nonfiction or technical articles or books, and I'm sure that the WM has all that good stuff in there too...but it's also a couple of bucks more expensive, and why should I pay for stuff I'm not going to use?

So. Enlighten me, o flist. Is there a good reason to spring for the full WM, or am I just as well off with the N&SSWM?

I will also hie me to the library tomorrow Monday (duh!) and scope them both out.

That last is the best course of action. See for yourself.

“Steven Goforth says he spent $140 on clothes and tickets to the Citrus High School homecoming dance. His friend Samantha Kelley, who invited him, is a student at the Inverness, Florida, school. But the night before the dance, Samantha's mother got a call from school officials saying Goforth couldn't attend the dance At the time, the school didn't say why, but now district officials say it was because Goforth is being homeschooled. Goforth's parents want to know why children who attend other schools were allowed to attend the dance but not their son.”

Far be it from me to be a lawsuit-happy harpy, but this situation begs for one. It would be one thing if the school had a policy of "No outside students from any other schools anywhere." That's fair. But to say "Nope, nuh-uh, you homeschooled kids are SOL even though you live in the neighborhood and your parents pay taxes into the school district--oh, you, from Michigan? Come on in!" That's blatent discrimination.

As my (very smart) Hubby pointed out, the accusation tends to be "homeschooled kids are poorly socialized"--but when this kid wants to socialize with others in his peer group and is turned away? That is, as my friends across the Pond would say, NOT ON.

Way back in the day when Writer's Digest was just starting the goodness that is Writer's Market, there was only the one. Then they started to put out separate editions for separate things. NOW they have a gazillion of them. The original is still being produced but it's mostly useful to novelists. The Short Story WM is more helpful to writers like us who write short stories and look for those specific markets. There are also Poet's Markets, Song Writers' Market, one for finding Agents, and one for illustrators of Children's books. I think that's all of them, but who knows, they could be putting together more specific and specialized versions as we speak!
