I woke up to the news that Steve Irwin died in a freak stingray accident. I'm sure everyone on my flist knows this by now, but I just wanted to add my condolences. His enthusiasm and love for all creatures great and small shone through everything he did, and it was nice to see someone with a worldwide voice who appreciates reptiles as much as I do. His life's work was making the unloveable into something we could at least understand and even admire, and he will be sorely missed. Condolences to Terri, Bindi, and Bob, and the rest of his friends and family.

I was shocked to hear this too. Given his love of danger, I guess it was not entirely surprising, but this was just way freaky.
I think he'll be greatly missed.

He (http://living.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1307902006&format=print) even discovered a new species, a type of snapping turtle that now bears his name, Elseya irwini - Irwin's turtle.

It is still hard to believe that a man who flirted with danger lost his life with a relatively gentle creature, the stingray. I've allowed my children to pet stingrays!
