So, naturally, I've been making book-cover-things for the stories I'm taking to the [livejournal.com profile] writercon library.

Under the cuts to spare the flist, because they're kinda big:

Writing? Was is this "writing" of which you speak? So what if my love interests have barely exchanged three sentences thirteen pages into it?

*headdesks* Yeah. I need to get on that...

Come on, Antubis. *kicks Muse in its fuzzy pants*

Hey, those are impressive! What did you use? (I could accomplish that damage effect on Whatsername, but it would be a job, and I'm not sure it would come out anywhere near as well.)

*blush* Aw, thanks!

Hubby's gone, so I'll probably be up until around three. lol

I use PaintShopPro8. For the damage on Kaylee, I found a pic of her at IMDB, creatively cropped it, and got rid of the flowers using the clone tool. Then I went hunting "bruises" and "black eyes" on Google Image Search, copied, pasted, and blended. The little cuts were done with the paintbrush set for one pixel.

I think it took longer to actually find appropriate bruises than it did for me to work them into the image.

I'm obviously going to have to invest in that or a similar program - I've heard good things about it from others. But I don't need to be dropping a hundred bucks on non-essential software! I'll probably trawl eBay.

I mean, I can do stuff like this (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/nodrogg/Iron%20Storm/norma_2.jpg) or this (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/nodrogg/Iron%20Storm/IronStorm_Sicily_002.jpg) or this (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/nodrogg/Iron%20Storm/IronStorm_FromRussia1959_2.jpg), and that's fine, but I've about reached the limit of what Microsoft Paint can achieve...

I picked up mine for under $30 on eBay. Whether it's a burned copy or an original is an open question (I have my suspicions), but it works fine and does what I want it to do, and it came with Animation Shop. An earlier version will be cheaper, and that's why I decided to go with PSP8 instead of PSP10. Because I'm all about "cheap." And yes, while you can do some impressive stuff in Paint (which it looks like you did), it's VERY limited.
