I'm going to get political here.

Israel just took out the founder of Hamas. And as the rest of the world screeches condemnation, I say, "Way to go, Israel. You can kill all the terrorists you want." To the rest of the world: Israel doesn't need your frelling permission to act in its interests. And you know what? Neither does the United States. Even if we had gone into Iraq unilaterally, without over thirty other nations at our side, it still would have been all right with me. I trust the leadership in charge right now--and all the anti-war activists seem to be forgetting that everyone thought Saddam had WMDs. Everyone. Including the members of the previous (Clinton!) Administration. And just because we haven't found them yet, doesn't mean they never existed--or that we won't find them later.

These terrorists don't want us to change. They want us to die. There is nothing whatsoever that we can do that will make them stop hating us. And in dealing with people like this, the only possible recourse is to kill them before they kill us. Was the strike on Iraq pre-emptive? You bet your ass it was, and so what? We should have waited ten years until he did have WMD capability? Well, gee. That would have been...stupid. As far as I'm concerned, the fact that Iraq hosted an Al-Queida training camp with a 727 fuselage in it is quite enough for me. Everyone else seems to forget that little detail, but I haven't.

i agree with everything you said.

In this world that we live in, the simple fact of the matter is, 'you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.' There are no answers or actions to please everyone. In fact, sometimes there are no answers to please ANYONE. But, when leaders decide that action needs to be taken to protect or enhance the life of their people, I find it hard to argue. Not necessarily argue that they shouldn't have done this or that, but argue that i wouldn't have done the same.

The Madrid bombings made it abundantly clear to me that the War on Terror was the right move. Iraq is still up in the air with most of the world, but hey, I'm pleased to see a dictator fall, even if it is a decade too late.

Here's the half empty though. I understand that the world is angry with America over wanting to make Iraq a democracy. Democracy is a system that has only worked in limited amounts. In countries in the modern world, it is harder to just turn power over to the people when their views don't line up with the leadership. You then have a Haiti.

America is not the great evil or the great good of this world. But neither is any other country, and people need to realize this. I think that action should've been taken in Iraq, but I think it should take place in many other countries as well. It all comes back to the setup of power wants the world to 'stay the same as it was yesterday' and some world powers wanting, 'to change the world for the better.' Neither is right, neither is wrong, but something has to be agreed upon, because there are things that need to get done.

Hey, sorry to write if i'm not welcome. Just caught the political rant and it interested me.

You're more than welcome here, Daniel--in fact, I do "know" you from [livejournal.com profile] jerib_78's LJ. So, kick up your feet, relax, enjoy my drabbles, and have fun. :-)

What's really ironic about our current action in Iraq is that most of the criticism is coming from people who are mad because we didn't do it under the auspices of the UN. And the same people say that we didn't go far enough in the first Gulf War...but it was the UN that decided that taking Saddam out at that time wasn't going to happen.

The UN is an extremely ineffective organization, because no one there can take a definite decision. All they do is yak yak yak...and nothing gets done. And since decision-making is beyond the UN's capability, they're seen as weak targets, which is why the terrorists in Iraq targeted the UN's humanitarian aid workers when the UN finally deigned to make an appearance. And the terrorists were proved correct, when the UN did nothing in retaliation.

There are no "good" answers in dealing with people who want us dead. All we can do is protect ourselves (and our friends) as best we can and let the chips fall where they may.
