And oh, yes. I am holding and squeezing it and naming it "George." I looooooves it, I does. I went from "Oh dear, the idea of making pins from LJ icons for the nice folks at [livejournal.com profile] writercon isn't going to work at all because these printouts SUCK" to "Oh my gosh, wow, photo-y goodness, these are SHINY."

After playing with the settings a bit, I've determined that the optimum size for these bad boys is an inch square. And NOW I get into legalities. Most icons are fandom-related, made from copyrighted images. Using them for LJ is toeing a fine enough line, legally, although I think the argument can be made that this is "fair use." Making a profit on them, however, is a whole 'nother biscuit.

So, I probably can't "sell" them as such. But...taking donations to cover cost of materials? That should be kosher, shouldn't it?

Is any of the stuff we do kosher? Seriously, I think if you don't "sell" them, then hopefully you'll be fine. I think. I guess.

Even in today's lawyer-overrun culture, nobody at a Buffycon is going to haul off on you for having BtVS anything. The only way you could approach hot water, seriously, is if you took out ads in trade periodicals and went into genuine business. Even then, it would be a while before anyone even noticed.

The same thing happened with Star Trek props back in the 1970s - you could go to cons and get pretty much anything you wanted in the way of reproductions, made well or poorly, caveat emptor. There were even toys and model kits marketed under nudge-nudge-wink-wink names... and that's when things started to crack. Even then, if Paramount hadn't decided to regain interest in its moribund property and make a movie and eventually another TV show, nobody would have cared much. But they did, and the hammer came down and only the lawyers were happy, as always.
