I'm not sure that the reaction shot is what I should begin with here. The visceral horror of what Ben is confronted with, considering his history and the bad memories this brings back of sadistic insurgents (who, canonically, killed one of his female comrades right in front of him while he was helpless to intervene), might be something I need to confront directly instead of just alluding to it in dribs and drabs ("Her body was still warm.") while he tries to forget.

Or I could flash back to it in a nightmare.

Of course, the fact that I just cracked 8,900 words in this thing is less okay, but I guess I'll just have to deal. And I'm only 2,200 in right now, so we'll see how it shakes out when this revision is done.
