First things first. The 2006 WriterCon archives are open for business, thanks to the lovely and effulgent [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves. I've written 27 fics this year. I've pared the choices down to six that I'd consider sending to her. So, I put it to you, my lovely and effulgent flist:

Which fic should I send to the 2006 WriterCon archive?
Solid State
Black Market Beagles
Partners in Crime
Helpless
Survivor's Guilt
Cerberus

Linkage, for those folks who've forgotten the fics:
Solid State, an Angel S5 AU where Spike's corporeality was only temporary.

Black Market Beagles, a fic where the Serenity crew smuggle Beagles, and hijinks, as they say, ensue.

Partners in Crime, wherein Kaylee smuggles a kitten aboard the ship, and it immediately starts making Jayne's life miserable.

Helpless, which is either one of the best things I've ever written or one of the worst, in which Kaylee and Jayne are captured, she gets raped, and he gets to deal with it. I'm not sure I want to be remembered as "the person who wrote that rapefic," though, so I'm really on the fence about even including this one on the list.

Survivor's Guilt, in which Angel, Spike, and Illyria survive NFA, Illyria takes Spike as her mate, and Angel gets his Shanshu.

Cerberus, in which Niska captures Jayne and River and tortures Jayne for awhile. This is the one where I AU'd my own fic and wrote an alternate ending and an alternate middle for.

In other news, we're heading to the DFW area on the 5th to see the family; this will be our holiday trip. We're going to drive, take the PT, and stay in a hotel in Bedford.

Also, my child? Is brilliant. We were going to bribe him with cookies last night to see if he could spell "cat" with his magnetic letters, but he was missing the "C"--so we told him to find the letter up in his room the next morning. He found his missing letters, and the next morning the Hubby's sitting there at his computer with his coffee, and Da Boy says "Cat." And the Hubby says, yes, we have two. "No, CAT," Da Boy insists...and then the Hubby sees that he's got the letters for "cat" in his hand. He also spelled "hat," "sat," "pat," "rat," and a few other "at" words that we've been working on, so apparently our little lessons are sinking in. That's a YAY in my book. *grin*

Writing? I'm not, really. However, I have shiny icons! Which I will post, um, later. I did manage to find an anthropomorphic personification my Muse, however. *points to icon I will now use whenever I whine about writing* I know [livejournal.com profile] kantayra will like him.

That's astoundingly prolific. Does WriterCon accept fanfic? I'd ask [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves, but effulgent is a good word to use: Any way I can think to ask, would sound snide.

WriterCon is a convention for people who read and write fanfic in Joss Whedon's sandbox--Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. We had 250 people show up at the first one last year, which is really amazing for a first Con that's as specialized as that was. 90% female, too. This year it's in Atlanta, July 21-23.

As for my output...well, it's mainly short stuff. That's what, about two or three fics a month? Meh. *isn't impressed*

That's a weirdly generic name for such a specific clientele. Some of the community names here that you've mentioned I like better - whedonosity, I think was one, and maybe jossverse - those names at least say what's going on.

I suppose if enough non-Whedonoids showed up, they could wrest the course of the event into more open waters - or agitate for some truth-in-advertising, get it renamed Joss the Dice or something...

Well, there's talk of expanding the subject matter, so I guess they wanted to make the name as generic as possible. And if you visit the website, you'll figure out pretty quick what it is. [livejournal.com profile] writercon has a poll up, which you're more than welcome to participate in. :-)

The event, by the time it rolls around, will be pretty well set in stone. The days will be filled with specific panels and discussion groups--but plenty of time for socializing as well. And you can take what you learn and apply it to other fandoms or even writing in general, if you're disposed. They had panels last time on overcoming writer's block, how to be a good beta reader, grammar, and legal issues related to fanfic--plus there was a workshop for problems we might have been having on a specific work-in-progress.

The last one was in Vegas and well worth the (about) $600 I spent on food, hotel, registration, and STUFF. I posted about it when I got back.

Woot!

That your son is spelling. How old is the little one?

He's four, will be five in March. Part of my problem is that I have no idea where he should be at this stage, so I'm throwing words and math and days of the week at him and just hoping something sticks. LOL Apparently it has.

Sounds like he's coming right along.

Just whatever you do, don't pay attention the kindergarten requirements. My daughter is three and she's at or surpassed some of those (at least for my locality). Seems that we are trying to breed a generation of underachievers.

Heh, I should look them up anyway, just to see if I'm missing anything...

But, yeah, we're planning on homeschooling, because the public schools BITE.

I will vote in the poll after I take the time to read through the fics. I've only ready "Cerberus" so far.

I'm still undecided. Can we vote more than once?

I believe it's set up so you can vote once a day. :-)

I haven't voted because I've only read two of the fics. I don't read Firefly fics because I only watched one episode, decided that it was a load of derivative crap that made no sense, and never watched again.

So me voting for "Survivor's Guilt" wouldn't really be representative.

Might not be "representative," but you're entitled to an opinion anyway. :-)
