is my Dad's 70th birthday.

He and Mom live on the beach in Port Aransas, TX, in a motorhome, which they see the country in when gas prices permit. My younger sister and my younger brother live in Arlington, TX, and I live in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah.

And we, at Mom's instigation, hatched a nefarious plot wherein we all surprised him by coming down for it. He had NO IDEA that we were coming, at all. My sister showed up on Friday, my brother and his wife showed up early this afternoon, and Da Boy and I came (the Hubby would have, but there was no room on the flight to San Antonio, non-revving being what it is) late this afternoon.

Understand that the Hubby not making it threw a crimp into my plans. I'm not very good at electronic stuff I don't use every day, and thus the cell phone and the GPS unit are a mystery to me at the best of times. So, the GPS unit tried to send me home until I figured out what button I needed to push so it would send me to Port A instead. Up I-10 toward El Paso wasn't right...

Once I got that figured out, I managed to call my sister (understand that I have no idea how to access the phone book in the cell phone. None) via pushing random buttons until something that looked right popped up, and let her know that, yes, Da Boy and I were (finally) on our way. And, of course, this was after a contretemps at the airport wherein the car rental place we had a reservation at didn't send a shuttle bus even after a phone call and a 45-minute wait, and I ended up saying "screw this" and gave our business to a company that could be bothered to, you know, show up.

The drive from SA to Port A was uneventful (once I got going in the right direction), and by turns beautiful and tedious. The bluebonnets are out, and people are pulling over and taking pictures. Some sort of funky tree-thing (looks almost like a Joshua Tree, but not really) is also flowering. And it seems that every other wildflower in existence is also blooming. So we've got blues and purples and reds and pinks and yellows and whites and everything in between vying for attention. And I managed to nearly run us off the road because I saw some real live Texas Longhorn Cattle grazing in some flowers and got distracted by the Pretty. *headdesk* God, I hate driving.

Anyway. We're here until Wednesday, when (hopefully) we will make it home, and then leave again on Friday for the Easter Jeep Safari down in Moab. The timing of Easter this year? Could have been better.
