Because I've gotten into a discussion about consent issues and gender roles regarding a particular fanfic (not one of mine), and of course, it's All About Me and My Story and My Issues--or at least, it gets me thinking about such.
And I realized that I have, completely unintentionally, subverted gender roles here. The woman has all the power in the relationship (if you can call it that; I guess that's what it is, for a certain value of "relationship"), and the man has virtually none. I'm going to need people to go through this thing with a fine-toothed comb to make sure that I haven't just totally emasculated the poor guy, because that certainly isn't my intention.
NOT ONLY THAT.
But I realized that, if the gender roles were reversed? Boy, howdy, this thing would be ten times more problematic than it is, vis a vis consent issues. Considering how problematic the consent issues already are...yeah. If this was a male vamp and a female wolf, OMG.
And I also realized that I would never ever abuse a female character the way I've abused Ben. And honestly, I'm not sure if that's a bad or a good thing. I guess it depends on why--and that's something I don't even know.
