You can probably upgrade the RAM, though you have to make sure it's the same type, and being a laptop, it might just be easier in the long run to have someone do it for you. (Not Best Buy, though.)
As for your flash drives, Windows 98 requires drivers to recognize USB devices. (Actually, so do XP and Vista, but they're included for those OS's. On 98, you have to install them yourself.) You can probably find the proper drivers on the Memorex website. *Had to do this when I was running Win 98*
