Well, the hornbill in the closeups came nearly right up to the wire, which I was able to shoot through because you can stand right next to it, and the camera has a 12x zoom. Add to that a crop to 5x7 in PSP, and it looks like there's nothing between me and the bird and I could reach out and touch him.
The toucans were shot through glass, using a flash angled either up or sideways to cut back on glare. The flash really makes their colors pop.
