Which you were hunting for, even though you're something like 2500 words into the thing...
Anyway, isn't it nice when that smacks you upside the head so hard it makes you go "Well, DUH." And, I dunno, maybe my theme isn't all that and it's a common theme in zombie/vampire/werewolf/what-have-you stories, but it's what I've got and I do believe I'm going to stick with it and see where it goes.
And now that I've noodled it a bit more, perhaps my ending will change, and not be nearly as bleak as it was going to be at first blush. Perhaps it is a Romance, and not a Tragedy, after all. No, not That Way, you pervs, but in the Happily Ever After sense.
