This is me, still tweaking the opening scene. Now I'm wondering if the tone of the thing is too flippant, if maybe not!Harry's sarcasm circuits are firing, perhaps, too efficiently, if it doesn't seem serious enough for the hellish situation he's in.

*tears hair out*

I may post it later under a heavy filter and have some of you workshop it to death. Because right now I'm afraid it still sucks.

I mean, it's better, yes. But it still sucks.

In other news, I've cracked 92,700 words on it, which is over 7,000 more than when I stuck an END at the bottom back in December. I'm not actually sure where the bulk of those extra words came from, but they're good words, I think, so, yay.

that my opening scene strikes just about the right balance between "flippant" and "ohholyshit." Because not!Harry can't turn off those sarcasm circuits, even when people are beating him and drowning him and he's peeing blood. At the same time, well--people are beating him and drowning him and he's peeing blood. So, not only is this a way to throw readers face-first into the action, but it also tells us something about his character. This scene thus plays a dual role and carries its weight quite well.

I should make a "the mighty sarcasm of not!Harry" tag...
