Have I mentioned lately how much I really detest Hollyweird?

So, the Oscar nominations came out today. And, surprise, surprise, I've actually seen three of the five movies nominated for Best Picture. "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Master and Commander--The Far Side of the World," and "Seabiscuit" are all worthy of Oscar consideration. And that's why none of them will win. I've never even heard of "Lost in Translation." I've heard "Mystic River" is good, but I hate Sean Penn, who got a nomination for Best Actor for his work in that, so I'll probably avoid it.

One thing that really stands out is that none of the actors in the three movies that I've seen that were nominated for Best Picture were nominated for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, or Best Supporting Actress. In fact, the only movie I've seen that actors were nominated for was "Pirates of the Carribean." And that sends my WTF-o-meter right into the red. What, these movies were good enough to get a nod for Best Picture, but none of the performances in them was Oscar-worthy???? Sean Astin? Tobey Maguire? Russell Crowe? Others, whose names I don't know, but whose performances really stick out in my mind, like the guy who played the doctor in "Master and Commander," or the guy who did Gollum in ROTC? What about the guy who played the horse trainer in "Seabiscuit"?

Except, of course, that Tim Robbins and Sean Penn were nominated, both for "Mystic River." And they're two of the most vocal anti-American actors out there. Johnny Depp too--although at least he had the courage of his convictions to actually move out of the country, to France, which can have him (I will say that I totally enjoyed his performance in "Pirates" and hope he wins). Unlike Alec Baldwin, who also gets a nod here. Gah.

Ah well. Guess I don't really care; the last time I cared about Oscar nominations, "Shakespeare in Love" was up against "Saving Private Ryan"--and the wrong movie won.

I suppose some of my monumental irritation with Hollyweird has been fueled today by my going and seeing "The Butterfly Effect." Spoilers behind the cut, if you haven't seen it.

Oh well. Hopefully our little trip to Phoenix will get me out of this funk I'm in. Zoos are good for that.
