Yeah, we've seen one movie nominated for Best Picture--"The Aviator." So, I've got a great big "Meh" reaction to tonight's festivities. The only thing I have strong feelings about as far as the nominees this year go, is that I devoutly hope "Million Dollar Baby" loses big. Which probably means it will win big.

And, let me get this straight: Ray Charles, Howard Hughes, and JM Barrie all get Oscar nods. Alfred Kinsey's bio gets a major nomination. Who gets basically ignored this year? Jesus Christ. Dude. That's screwed up.

Arnold Schwartzenegger said something interesting this morning on "This Week Needs David Brinkley." And I didn't notice it until he mentioned it. There's no category for stunt work. Man, those guys and gals sometimes risk their lives for the sake of a realistic shot, but TPTB at the Academy think that Sound Editing and Sound Mixing are more important.

Humph.

Jesus Christ? *blink* Why would he get an Oscar? And who is JM Barrie?

You mean you don't remember the big brouhaha about "The Passion of the Christ"? JM Barrie was the author of "Peter Pan" and the subject of the movie "Finding Neverland," which was nominated for Best Picture, and Johnny Depp nominated for best actor. Whereas "The Passion" got basically ignored.

But... but... the Passion of the Christ was last year. Don't you know that the Oscars only nominate movies that come out this year? Heh.

It is kind of stupid, but then again I never saw any of the pictures nominated nor Passion so I don't care.

No, Passion came out the same year as all these others. Early in the year, it is true, but still 2004. Easter release date.

...as evidenced by the fact that it *did* get two nominations--one for the Score, and one for makeup.

Whee.

Oh, right! I thought you meant the real Jesus. Doi. Guess I'm finally losing it. I never saw Passion, so I kind of forgot about it. Plus, it just seems like such a long time ago...

I have rejected the Oscars in favor of the computer! The other pretty glowy screen. ^_^

LOL Us, too. We may watch something later, a DVD or something. No big plans for tonight. We watched NASCAR this afternoon, so the box was squawking at us for four and a half hours anyway.

Actually, I'm talking about late 2004. Early 2004 is practically a whole 'nother year for the Academy and movies released then only get nominated for small things (except for Kate Winslet).

Check it:
The Avaitor Release Date: Dec. 10
Ray Release Date: Oct. 29
Sideways Release Date: Oct. 22
Million Dollar Baby: Dec. 17
Finding Neverland: Nov. 12

Meanwhile, the Passion of the Christ was released Feb. 25 and you can already order the DVD and it's being prepared to be shown on national television.

Hollywood has a five-month memory. If it wasn't released in the last for months, it doesn't exist.

Well, that's true as a practical matter. Most of the studios wait to release the movies they want for Oscar consideration until late in the year. And Mel didn't "sell" the movie to the Academy, which is probably another reason it got ignored.

Not that I'm bitter...
