I have a winter bird bath that heat comes on when the temp gets to a certain degree. Works quite well. My garden is bird city - mostly birds you expect to see, but with the occasional 'wow!'. This autumn, a Mayan Dove was in my yard for a few weeks. We have a variety of shrubs/bushes with different sorts of berries, even the robins have stayed this year due to the bumper crop.
