So...

[livejournal.com profile] writercon 2009 is a go. It's in Minneapolis, July 30-August 2.

I have...really mixed emotions about this. On the one hand, I've been to both previous WriterCons and had a tremendous time. I love meeting my fannish peers and getting all meta with stuff and talking about writing.

On the other hand.

  • Something like this will run me, conservatively, about a thousand dollars. That's a thousand dollars I could spend going to Mile Hi Con or ArmadilloCon or some other pro Con.

  • I've written one fanfic in the last, oh, two years. Count 'em, Jim, one. And I'm not planning on writing any more. My focus has entirely shifted to original fiction.

  • Fandom has splintered and scattered somewhat since 2004 and 2006. Honestly, the only fanfic I'm reading anymore is Iron Man and KKBB. I can't remember the last time I read anything in Buffy, Angel, or Firefly. I barely skim the newsletters anymore.

So...yeah. Now, if there's going to be a pro track, I'd definitely be interested in that, and in fact would be more than happy to be on panels about making the transition, finding markets, etc. But if that's not a factor, well, then...

    Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Eh. I'd save the money for another con. Then again, while I do write fanfic, I find the idea of a real life fanfic-based con to be...egocentric?

Original fiction > fanfic in my mind. ::shrug::

There's a fair amount of nostalgia involved here. I've been to both previous WriterCons and they were great. It's a big social thing for me too. I...don't get out a lot, and reconnecting with people on my flist, face to face, is very cool.

And if there's a pro track, then I feel like I'd be giving back to the community that gave me so much, by being on panels, you know? Because, really, I'm not sure I would have even started writing again had it not been for fanfic.

Depends on the pro fic. I've read better fan fic than some.

I've been told I should be writing pro fic, but I like writing fan fic.

I'll be there, con comming. But I understand. Travelling anywhere is expensive now.

I, for one, would love to see you there but I understand the financial restrictions. Hey, if you come to ArmadilloCon I still get to see you. :)
