Okay, local Fox station?

I realize that someone walking into a mall and opening fire with a shotgun, killing possibly more than one person several people (according to current estimates), is not something we see every day here in peaceful little old Salt Lake City.

However, interrupting a show like 24 to tell us about it? NOT COOL.

I mean, really. What the hell am I supposed to do with this "breaking news"? I'm sitting here ensconced in my comfy living room, miles and miles away from Trolley Square. Yes, it's a tragedy. But I could have waited a couple of hours to find out about it. You did not need to interrupt 24 twice to tell me what happened. Also, saying "Oh, we'll air it on our website in its entirety tomorrow online" is cold comfort, especially for my Hubby, who has to WORK tomorrow. *grumps*

Anyway, enough of my shallowness in the face of a horrible event. Let's have more squeeing about my vacation, shall we?

First of all, I *heart* Hotwire with every fiber of my being. We got a screaming deal for staying at the Doubletree Inn, right by the airport, in a suite...for $56 a night. This included a full HOT breakfast buffet, although not internet access in the room. However, we got free internet access and printing in their Business Center. I swear, nine times out of ten, Hotwire is the way to go for hotel deals. Love it love it love it.

One disappointment we did have, however, was not getting to eat at the Heart Attack Grill, which we heard about on some radio talk show one day when we were on the road--because they were being threatened with a lawsuit by some uptight nurses' organization or other...which was afraid that the women they have dressed as "nurses" in the restaurant would be confuzzled by the patrons with real nurses. Because apparently the members of the public are too STUPID to know the difference between a waitress dressed as a nurse and an actual nurse.

However, the place was closed for remodeling, so we didn't get to eat there. *emo tear* Maybe next time.

The first thing we got to see at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum was a free-flight bird show starring Harris Hawks, which were flying right over our heads, so close we had to duck a few times. I've also figured out the camera a little better, so I can get action shots, which helps. I also got some VERY nice shots of the Gray Fox (which species I didn't have any pictures of, previously), and the Ocelot. They've also got a Hummingbird enclosure with the little guys flying around, and one was on a nest, which I got a really nice shot of as well. I really want to go back there when the desert is blooming.

We hit the Phoenix Zoo just before they were going to feed the Wild Dogs, and stopped at the Spotted-Necked Otter enclosure to watch the three of those frolic around in their pool together. One was a youngster, born at the zoo about six months ago, and otters are always awesome. The Wild Dogs were very active as well, chasing each other around the enclosure and having a good time, and we got to hear about them from the keeper, and I got a couple of beautiful action shots.

Also? Watching a Mandrill masturbate was not on my "List of Things I Want to See Before I Die." Just sayin'. However, on our trip back around, the male was posing for me very nicely, and I got some REALLY sweet close-ups of his face. And next door, the Hamadryas Baboon gave me a nice big yawn, which I caught as well.

Then the Cheetahs decided to put on a little show for me, and they cleaned each other's faces and were being all cute. *hearts*

The Wildlife World Zoo has New Guinea Singing Dogs, which look like little tiny Dingos and are not something you see every day. They were pretty friendly little critters, wagging their tails and coming right up to the fence. Which meant, of course, that I couldn't get any good shots of them, but I got to see them, which is more than a lot of people get to do.

We also got to feed the Turacos, and Da Boy got to feed a Giraffe. I got some really NICE shots of the Meerkats too.

And now I must close this entry, for, lo, we have some "Heroes" to watch. :D
