agilebrit: (I'm a terrible person)
Well, I didn't win the Merry Little Apex Christmas flash fiction contest, but the story that did win was pretty spiffy, so I'm not too disappointed.

And the handsome and hard-working Larry Correia has posted his sixth annual Christmas Noun story. If you have not read these, you totally should, because they are hilarious. WARNING: Conservatism not only lurketh there, but is right out in the open gnashing its fangs. If you are sensitive about our Fearless Leader's Signature Legislative Achievement being mercilessly skewered, this is probably something you don't want to read.

And now, for your enjoyment (or something), I'll post the 250-word story I entered in the Apex contest. WARNING: It is gleefully dark, and bad things happen to children in it. Also, there's a couple of f-bombs. And thus it is Expandunder the bouncing LJ-cut. )

A very Merry Christmas to those on my flist who celebrate it. Happy Holidays to those of you who celebrate something else. And, um...Happy Near End of December to those of you who celebrate nothing at all.

I may be scarce online tomorrow, seeing as how I'm supposed to be interacting with my Actual!Family on Christmas. The menu shall be Wif Burritos with Bison Meat (OMNOMNOMOMG). We watched "Muppet Christmas Carol" tonight. Yes, I cried when Tiny Tim died. I do that every year. IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT THE TINY TIM IN THIS VERSION IS A GREEN FROG PUPPET WHO DOESN'T ACTUALLY DIE. I CRY ANYWAY. EVERY. TIME.

And even though we only got back from our vacation yesterday, we still managed to get all the shopping done for Da Boy today. Yes, during the Christmas Eve Madness. I decided that I was not in any sort of hurry and just went with the flow, although when I found out that the reason traffic was backed up on Redwood Road was a nasty wreck, I took a detour home. But going with the flow and just being patient (and not minding parking in the back of the lot) served to reduce the stress mightily.

Anyway. Merry Christmas, y'all. And many thanks for the Virtual Gifts gracing my userinfo page right now. They are muchly appreciated. *squishes you all*

Happy Holidays to those who celebrate something else.

And, um...happy Thursday to those who don't celebrate anything at all?

I don't get to open prezzies until Saturday, since the Hubby left for work yesterday and doesn't get back until then. And I think I'm actually using my prezzie right now anyway. So...yeah. Quiet day today, watching the blizzard. Very glad I don't have to go out.

In other news--

Rather than posting the not!kkbb/im story under a heavy filter, having to format it for the web, break it up into several posts, remember the filter, yaddayaddayadda...

I'm thinking about emailing it as a file attachment to interested parties.

Now, I started writing this thing in WordPerfect, and switched to Open Office about 2/3 of the way through. I can save it as an .rtf file if needed, but I don't know how the formatting would come through--I think it would be all right, and it's not like there's any "special" formatting anyway, but I've already got it saved eight ways from Sunday and doing it again just seems like a pain. *eyes all the different docs* 'Bout time I gave this thing its own folder, yes...

Unless anyone has serious objections, I think that's what I'm going to do. So, sing out if you're interested, leave me an email addy (I can screen the post if you like), and tell me if you have Open Office so I know if I should save it as an .rtf or not (which any word processor should be able to open). On another note, if you don't have Open Office, why not, for heaven's sake? It's free, it opens any file format under the sun, and it's free. Did I mention the free part?

So. That's where it sits right now. I'm about midway through my first editing pass, where I'm getting an overall view of how it hangs together, and I have a meeting with my Writing Buddy on Sunday to see what he thinks about it. So it won't go out or up or whatever until probably Monday or Tuesday at the earliest, maybe not until Friday.

We actually celebrated yesterday, because the Hubby had to work today. So we opened pressies and I made turkey and stuffing and taters and then zucchini bread. Da Boy was pleased with all his presents (including the socks that the Hubby gave him, LOL). Hubby and I have gotten rather cavalier with each other's presents, and often, now, it seems that we're either there when we buy them for each other...or we actually pick it up ourselves (as I did the day Serenity came out, because, again, he had to work). But this way, we're sure of getting each other what we want instead of flailing around going "durrrr," so it's good. He got me DVDs and books, and I got him clamps. Yes, you read that right. Clamps. Big ones. But they're what he wanted, and he never buys the silly things for himself, and that's my definition of a good present: Something that you really want but won't buy for yourself.

In fic-writing news, I have an opening paragraph for a Jayne + Zoe thing. We'll see if it actually goes anywhere.
